ok I know this is gonna sound like a dumb question but... when a team calls up a guy from the minors thats never been in the majors before, why do they state it as recalling a guy instead of calling them up? how can you recall someone if they've never been called up before?

A MLB team has a contract with the player and does actually "put" them in the minor leagues to be "called back" later. I think.

If he's not on the 40-man roster, he's on a minor league contract, and his contract has to be purchased by the major league team to put him on the 40-man roster.
