They were trying hard to deal him in the offseason. Weirdest part was the Rockies immediately sent him to the minors.

The Rockies GM (Dan O'Dowd?) made some really odd comments, saying something to the affect "We could either get the guy that sucked with the Mets the last few years, or the star in Japan."

The Mets had to eat nearly $4 million as well to clean up one of Jim Duquette's final (of many) mistakes. Matsui's remaining salary is $4.6 mil which the Mets must pay whereas the Rockies will pay the remainder of Marrero's $750,000 salary.

Jose Valentin's play made Matsui expendable and unlike the Scrubs who carry 6 or 7 2B on their 40 man roster, the Mets are looking for insurance in the OF / 1B and an emergency backstop so I like the deal on the baseball side. Thank God the Mets can afford eating the salary.

And so the opening of the 'trading season' officially begins.

Time to pick up the phone Kenny!

Maybe he doesn't fit into their code of conduct just yet.

The ignorance continues in a second thread. I'm shocked.

I think Eli Marrero would have made an excellent replacement for Gload. He hits lefties well, plays the OF alright, and could be the 3rd catcher, something the Sox could use, as Ozzie is reluctant to pinch hit or pinch run for his catcher with only 1 more on the roster.

I don't know how KW did that deal, because BoSox and another team were competing for Gooch also. That was one of KW's shining moments, not the fact that he signed him, but the fact that he made it happen.
