The more I see Thorton play the more I am starting to really like this guy. I like Cotts a ton but it seems like hes a touch off at the moment. I feel much more comfortable right now when Thorton comes out.

In a word, yes. Thorton is pitching superbly, especially in his last 8 outings.

Basically I consider both of them the go-to middle relievers since I don't have a ton of faith in the right handers at this moment.

right now I feel equally comfortable with both of them.

And mariners fans see this and continue to swear at their team's player development. They spend a number of years and millions of dollars failing to develop his abilities and Coop succeeds in about a month.

I must ask given the title of this thread, who is Neal Cott?

Thornton seems to be The Guy these days.

Can Coop get the Cy Young this year?

This Mariner fan disagrees with you. Not all of us swear by the M's player development, especially when it comes to pitchers.

I think Thornton has replaced Marte. Cotts is still the primary set up man since none of the righties is inspiring much confidence.

I think he said swear at (as in, our player development people are a bunch of incompetent ****ups), not swear by...

Yes, Thornton is doing well, but I think it's a bit early to deem Cotts unusable, or even give him "he makes me nervous whenever he comes in" status.

Honestly, now that Logan isn't in the pen anymore there's no one who does not have the ability to come in and shut down the opposition. Sure Cliff has had some rough outings, but Coop seems to feel like he's going to be fine, and who the hell are we to argue with him? I would say though as much as I like Thornton that Cotts is still the guy I want being thought of as the second closer in the pen (behind Jenks of course). Neil has earned that right over the last few years. It's nothing against Thornton, just that you need to respect the body of work Neil has put up.

OOPS :redface: My bad, it's what I get for posting from work at 5 in the morning. We M's fans continually swear AT the development people.

Actually, I think Cliff is replacing Marte. Everytime Politte comes in, I know the other team is going to score.

I don't think Matt has already taken over Neal's job as the primary set-up man, and/or lefty specialist...however, I think he's gaining everyone's confidence (especially Ozzie) and will likely take over that role if he keeps pitching the way he has.

Props to Coop for turning this man around

Coop is the majic man, look at his stable. Where would any of the Sox top 5 be without this man?
Buerhle - doing bullpen work in Kansas City
Garland - Starting on some triple a team in Georgia
Contreras - A fifth starter for the Devil Rays
Vasquez - still in Arizona
Garcia - the sox lone ace

I think Kneel Kaat's, Bobby Jinx, and Matt Thorton should be kept away from the closer role. As for Cotts, Jenks, and Thornton, well they could all maybe close in a pinch.

Actually, I think Kittle42 specializes more in what I like to call "apostrophe atrocities."

I like both Thornton and Cotts. It seems like lately Ozzie/Coop have been going to Thornton more often than Cotts in the close games.

I can tell you that a few months ago, I never would have expected to feel comfortable with our lefties in the pen, but really, really nervous when our righties come in (sans Bobby).
