Well, as the 2006 draft approaches, let me update the status of a handful of DFE candidates the Sox drafted last year...
Top DFE candidates:
37th rounder Brian Flores, a LHP from New Mexico JC, was also a 22nd round pick of the Sox in 2004. The 2006 Conference MVP ran off an impressive line of: 15 G (12 starts), 12 wins, 1 loss, 12 CG's, 6 shut-outs, 85.2 IP, 2.00 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 114 K, 19 BB. He throws in the low-to-mid 90's and features a good slider. Will probably take 3rd round money or so to sign him, but that is just my speculation.
17th rounder Enrique Garcia out of Potomac State JC (WV) is a 6'5" 220 pound RHP. I could not find stats on him but last year's report on him had him throwing low 90's with a slider and splitter. Considered raw at the time. Made the 2006 Region XX NJCAA All-Region 1st Team. Only stats I could find indicated a record of about 8-3 with an ERA of around 4.00 and a little over 1 K/IP. Picture of him in action also mentioning his 10-inning 14 K performance in the Eastern District finals: http://www.potomacstatecollege.edu/athletics/mbaseball/EDFgm1SMC.html
23rd rounder Bobby La Framboise, LHP, Rio Hondo (CA) JC - Foothill Conference pitcher of the year, the left-hander is 11-2 with a 1.94 ERA. He has 110 strikeouts against just 26 walks in 97 innings. Both of his losses came in 1-0 complete game defeats.
29th rounder and SS AlJay Davis was a 1st Team All-Conference selection for his Northeast Oklahoma A&M College team. In 49 games he hit .404 to lead his team, and although he didn't display much power (2 HRs), he still hit 17 2B against just 20 K's while walking 26 times. He was also 32/35 in stolen base attempts.
44th rounder Drew George, SS, is a 6'2" talented switch-hitting SS for Lower Columbia (WA) CC. This is the same league Aaron Cunningham played in and is an all-wood-bat league. He hit .367-1-37 in 139 AB's and sported a .475 OBP. The league does not provide SB numbers, but he is solid defensively and was 1-st team all-conference last year as a Freshman. Helped lead his team to a 38-6 overall record.Others:
22nd rounder Christian Marrero, RF, Broward (FLA) CC - Drafted in the 20th round by the Braves out of Monsignior Pace HS in Miami, Marrero is a 6'2" 200 pound left-handed RF'er. He hit .312 with just 4 HR's, but had 7 2B and 4 3B to go with 30 RBI.
27th rounder Daniel Jordan, C, Broward (FLA) CC - a young catcher and teammate of Marrero. Hit just .246 with 3 HR's but played almost every day.
28th rounder Justin Sincock was also a 25th round selection of the Sox in 2004. The 6'9" RHP is nowhere to be found this year. I cannot find him in any of the California JuCo leagues this year despite being just a freshman last year. Not listed on the roster of his previous team.
30th rounder Brandon Langston, RHP out of Cleveland State CC. The 6'2" 200 pounder has signed to play at East Tennessee State University if he does not sign before or following the 2006 draft.
32nd rounder Matt Headley, LHP, San Jacinto (TX) JC - 6'2" 185 lbs - Not much of a prospect. 4.38 ERA with 21 BB and 19 K in 39 IP.
