Maddux not upset with umpire who squeezed him
May 20, 2006
BY MIKE KILEY (mkiley@suntimes.com) Staff Reporter
When they say that Greg Maddux is a smart pitcher, they aren't only referring to his Hall of Fame stuff, but his Hall of Fame mind.
He may argue with home-plate umpire Larry Vanover in front of 39,301 at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday, rankling Vanover to the point that sharp-eyed lip readers watching on TV could see Vanover shouting toward the mound at Maddux in the sixth and saying: "Don't [bleeping] show me up.''
Did Kiley watch the game? The reason Vanover shouted at Maddux is because Maddux was screaming at the ump. In fact, seconds before the ump shouted at Maddux, Maddux cursed out the ump. The whole time he was out there Maddux was stomping around like a spoiled brat who wasn't getting his way.
Maddux wasn't "squeezed." He was forced to throw the ball over the plate. He wasn't given an expanded strike-zone, or getting balls called strikes and as a result Maddux got his (butt) kicked just as I predicted (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1138324&postcount=16).

Doesn't Vanover know who I am?
