This is just a reflection of who's hot/who's not. This is a link on ESPN's main baseball page.

Lance Broadway gets an honorable mention too. Interestingly, Cleveland's 3rd baseman of the future, Andy Marte, is "not-so-hot" right now.

Field also won IL Batter of the Week honors (http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060515&content_id=71190&vkey=news_t494&fext=.jsp&sid=t494).
Sweeney won a couple of weeks ago.

Fields had 14 hits in the week, including 5 HR.

whats going to happen with him? this kid looks like he's going to be a stud... but on the other hand, crede is finally hitting his potential and is being compared to the likes of scott rolen and other third basemen greats. any ideas?

Teach him how to play LF

If you put Fields in LF, then you´re definitely going to weaken the defense, because Pods or Owens would have to play CF.

You´re asking the CFer to cover a ton of ground in that scenario, and Pods´defensive liabilities in center have been discussed to death here.

Theoretically, you have an OF of Fields, Owens and Sweeney in the future in that scenario, for the 2008 season. Owens is definitely going to have to pick up his game, both offensively and defensively...because he would be the only speed guy in the outfield.

If Fields hits .350 with power, they'll find a place to play him. As has been stated in this thread, he's athletic enough to play the outfield and, remember, Sweeney was playing some center before he pulled his hammy.

Personally, I don't believe you'll see Owens starting in the Sox outfield ever, but that's just me. Pods isn't going anywhere for a couple of years, we're probably going to pick up Dye's option at the end of the year, Sweeney was making real strides before the injury, and it's waaaaay too early to give up on Anderson. That's a lot of competition for a 25 year-old with no power who can't play center.

I could live with Fields-Anderson-Dye

Owens is a 4th outfielder if anything.

I'm just saying give him a shot in the outfield. He obviously isn't going to ever be better defensively than Crede at 3rd. See what he can do in the outfield. Fields, Anderson, Sweeney could be a pretty decent outfield 2 or 3 years from now.

The Sox have stuck with Crede for a long time, and, as you say, he finally seems to be hitting his potential. However, hasn't he had some back problems? Seems like it might not be bad idea to have a top-notch replacement waiting in the wings.

I think that this is a problem for a lot of players/positions. This team won the WS, and it is hard to think of replacing them. But KW has shown that he's willing to trade / replace a popular player (AR) with a young promising player in order to improve the team.
