I would have suspended him for the whole season, IMO. Young is a great player and I know he regrets the decision, but you have to protect the umpire in this case.

Maybe it's because I am an umpire, and I can say that getting a bat thrown at me would scare the absolute **** out of me.

Ump should have pressed charges too.

He got off light. I'd imagine he was told if he ever did anything remotely similar again, that he will be gone for a long time.

He got off pretty easy, I think.

Should be the whole season. He's getting off way to easy.

I don't want to say anything that isn't true but I thought he was tossed earlier in the year for bumping an umpire. If that is the case, he caught a HUGE break with only fifty games. Some would call it a pattern.

A Big Leaguer wouls be hit with only 30 days for that, reduced to 10 on appeal.

Young knows he got off easy because he was so remorseful. You know, "I deserved it". When you see the video it's hard to say it was an accident.

Exactly. I keep hearing how it is unclear by videotape to see intent. Shouldn't how fast the bat is being hurled toward the umpire be evidence enough? I would think a bat accidentally thrown backwards with such precision wouldn't be travelling quite that fast or that accurate.

To me, it's all about if he was looking at the umpire when he threw the bat. You can't tell from the video b/c he walks offscreen before he throws it. But he was walking away. If he simply just flung the bat backwards while walking away and it happend to hit the umpire, 50 games is appropriate. If he actually turned around and looked at the umpire when he threw it, then he shoulda got suspended the whole season.

Does anyone know if he was facing the ump or not when he threw it?

Anyways just my 2 cents.

Sure looked like the force at which the bat hit the umpire was enough for me to believe that he intentionally threw it at him.

In my eyes if steroids are a 50 game suspension, throwing a bat at and hitting an umpire should be no less than double the steroid suspension. Personally I would have gave him the whole season and give 80% of his income to MLB charitees.
