Why did Ozzie use Neal Cotts to close out today's win against the Anaheim Angels? Is it a righty/lefty thing, or is there more to it than that? Is Bobby Jenks' status as the closer of the Chicago White Sox in jeapordy?

Good win today for the defending World Series Champs.

Nope, Jenks already had 2 saves this series. He needed some rest.

Where did this idea come from?

It's Bobby's job to lose, and he sure as hell hasn't done anything to lose it.

Of course, he pitched all of 2/3 of an inning in those two games (Friday was technically not a save). I think it was more of a matchup thing than rest for Jenks. His job is not in jeopardy though.

Technically, he only got the save yesterday...the other out he got wasn't a save situation in Friday's game.

Uh, Jenks got the save yesterday and has 7 so the answer is no.

Don't read too much into it. Ozzie's just playing match-ups. Cotts made Anderson look bad on that first pitch.

Definitely the two lefties up in the inning and the need to give Bobby a day off instead of have him go 3 days in a row.

That said, Ozzie has never been afraid to put someone other than the closer out in the ninth if the situation calls for it.

How'd I know this thread would be started 5 minutes after that game?

Welcome to Everett's 98%.

Sadly, there are baseball "experts" who don't understand the concept of putting in the pitcher with the best chances of getting outs in a given situation and will whine about how "teams can't win with bullpens by committee."

Bullpens, by their very nature, are committees.

We also start a 3 game series against the Indians tomorrow and need Big Bad Bobby as fresh as possible.

It's a two-game series: tomorrow night and Tuesday morning (Chicago time).

Jenks is the closer...remember he threw both Friday and Saturday.

Okay, 2 game series  . And 7 in a row starting tomorrow. Does it really matter though? Gotta keep Bobby fresh either way to kill those Toons.

I kind of figure that it's ten in a row starting this past Friday. I do agree with your sentiment about Bobby, though.

I fully agree with you. I also feel that having Bobby in there on a consistent, regular basis defines the roles of the relief staff. Hey, we won so it does not matter.

I thought he was gonna take him out after the first leftie, but he only threw one pitch so he probably figured what the hell I'll leave him in.

Right, he is 7\7 in saves and he doesnt close one game and his spot is in jeopardy? Did u think before posting?

Also just to note, Jenks did pitch the first game but he didnt get the save

Ugh, are we going to get a "Is so-and-so the new such-and-such" after everytime a player does something once? It's one game...

Obviously, Cotts is not the closer, but it was nice to see him pitch well in that role today. Now, Ozzie knows Cotts can handle it next time Jenks needs a day off.

Biggest plus of this road trip so far: Cotts and Politte have both pitched well.

Is Cintron the new second baseman? Is Guillen mad at Iguchi for something?
