Just got my White Sox '06 Upper Deck Team Set in the mail today. These are fabulous. Topps did a nice job with their Sox Commemorative Set with the '05 design, but the actual player cards had photos that weren't necessarily updated (many of them were different spring training poses). These '06 Upper Deck cards actually capture some of the significant moments from the postseason. There are 16 cards in the Sox set...

Pods' diving catch to take a divet out of the Minute Maid leftfield turf. This was either the 7th or 8th inning of Game 4.....

Contreras knocking knuckles with Ross Gload. Now this had to have been Game 1 of the ALDS since it was the only home daytime playoff game, but was Gload on the field even though he wasn't on the 25 man roster?

A great shot of Hermanson and AJ...

That was a different game, because the Sox started wearing vests up until Game 2 of the ALCS, after Hangar's rant that they wear vests for the Minnesota series.

Yep - I just realized that. Maybe it was Opening Day 2005?

By coincidence, the 2006 Fleer Sox set arrived in the mail today also. Two days in a row of new Sox cards, can't beat that.

My general impression is that these cards aren't quite as nice as the Upper Deck cards. The paper stock is much thinner, the cards aren't glossy, the backs don't have a ton of information, and the photos aren't as varied. For example, you can tell that three or four of the cards were photographs taken on the same day in Kansas City.

A little history: Fleer Trading Cards went out of business last year. Upper Deck Trading Card Co. purchased the rights to the Fleer name and all of its subsidiaries. Fleer has been making cards consistently since 1981, so Upper Deck should be comended for buying the Fleer name and putting these cards out to keep the name alive.

Konerko and Pods below (Pods at the Shrine).

I just came across this Frank Thomas Upper Deck card. I've never seen it before...and that's because it's officially an A's card (its not offered with the Sox set at all). But, look at the photo.... That's a magnificent shot.

Couldn't they have gotten a pic of Thome in a SOX uniform? They had all spring training, plus pics from his press conference. Are the turn-around times on manufacturing cards that long? Or is it just laziness?

They're that long. Up until 10 years ago, the card would still have the Phillies logo on it and would have been stamped with "Traded to White Sox." These cards were just released a week or two ago. It would be impossible for them to include Spring Training photos from a month ago in this print run.

i'm a topps man, but i gotta hand it to UD, the fleer and ud sets look nice....most of upper deck's sets flat out suck.....the 06 products out so far(ud, fleer, first pitch) have decent designs, good photos, and somewhat value.
Gene

p.s. topps still kicks thier ass though...look at topps heritage or bazooka

I'll scan those in a little later tonight. You're correct, the Upper Deck First Pitch set was also nice....a really neat design. I was a little disappointed with Topps because their Series 1 photos are the exact same as their Opening Day photos. The only difference on the cards is the MLB Opening Day logo.

The Topps Heritage stuff just absolutely rules. I'm about a dozen cards away from finishing the 2006 set, which is maybe the best one they've put out yet. These are just tremendous cards that are going to be classics years from now.

Still put gum in the Heritage packs...but its wrapped in plastic so it won't stain any cards.
