Here's an article about Thome's streak that is pretty interesting - He's three games short of the longest streak since 1900 (Rolfe with 18 games in 1939 that was matched in 2000 by Lofton on the Indians).

Theoretically, he could have had a game where he only got on by a fielder's choice or an error and then scored, but he hasn't. (Reached base safely = hit or walk)

Yes, Thomas' streak also started the season in 1994.
