The hitters are also taking a ton of walks. 54 coming into tonight's game, good enough for third in the AL. 5 more BBs tonight.

They looked a lot like the 05 Sox tonight. Good stuff. This is when the Sox and Indians pull away from everyone else in the division. By the way, nice try Baltimore. 15-1? Man.

The Royals made an error, and we cashed in. Exactly what we need to do. Much better job by Garland. And Ozzie removed him from the game at just the right time, making sure he left the mound with the lead and a boost of confidence. That should end the calls for McCarthy to join the rotation. Nice, easy inning for Jenks too. Pretty good game all around.

Outstanding defensive game by the Sox tonight, despite Crede picking up an error.

Sox do a good job taking advantage of Berroa's error, or we might still be playing and getting in increasingly bad moods.:redneck

Good start for Jon to build on.

Nothing special, just a grounder that was misplayed by the shortstop and allowed the Sox to keep the inning alive.

I assume no one is worrying anymore about Podsednik after the last three games. And I assume tonight rested everyone's fears about Garland. Things are getting back to normal.

Great game tonight. Scott's second steal was the best stolen base attempt from him I saw since the first half of last year. He got a great jump and beat throw by steps. Jon was awesome too.

Eeer ya... my bad on the typo.

Yeah, as you said its comperable to what we were at this point last year. The key is going to be a nice little win streak like we had towards the middle-end of May last year. I see no reason why this team can't do it, and I think a sweep of this series will be a path to a big win streak.

That should end the calls for McCarthy to join the rotation.

I've not called for McCarthy to join the rotation. I would however like to point out he's our third best pitcher after Contreras and Buehrle and is being under-utilized in relief while we burn through his cheap non-arbitration years. Of course, with the way Politte has thrown, our bullpen might collapse without him.

Yeah thats my stance... I know McCarthy is a great pitcher and it just kills me that we CAN'T use him, but I understand why we can't.

Minnesota is going through the same situation with Liriano, where hes obviously ready for the big leagues, but just doesn't fit into the plans right now.

But hey its a damn good problem to have.

Garland pitched better tonight and he got some defensive help to keep him from the 'dreaded' big inning. He's getting better.

Nice game all around this evening.

Keep winning games.

And yes with Cleveland's soft schedule the Sox need to keep pace until the Tribe's fortunes turn. Look for those two clubs fighting it out the entire season. Hopefully the 'loser' of the divisional race will get the wild card and won't get skunked.

Considering the 3 games we basically gave away this year (3rd game vs. Indians, Ozuna game vs. Royals, and the game against Toronto on Friday), we're looking pretty good. 8-1 in our last 9 games...not bad, not bad at all.

Pods is looking good, and Garland did his job nicely today. Lets get Brian going and we're GREAT shape.

Yeah thats my stance... I know McCarthy is a great pitcher and it just kills me that we CAN'T use him, but I understand why we can't.

It's not like he's just sitting around wasting away. It seems obvious to me he's our new setup man by the way Ozzie's been using him lately, and a dominant 7th/8th inning guy who can go 1-2 innings can have a big impact.

Just got back from the game. The Sox were really helped by the wind tonight. There were some balls that were smoked by KC and just seemed to die in the wind before they came down to be caught. That catch by Anderson was amazing though.

Honestly, I thought Garland still left too many pitches right over the plate but its a start. Why has he abandoned the inside? Hawk and DJ are as puzzled as me. I have always been a big Garland fan and I know he will be fine but the strategy change is surprising. Does AJ make a diff in getting him to pitch inside? I assume not.

Now if Javy can give a good solid start tomorrow it will be a complete turn with quality starts and Burls is next up. The twinkies loom and I like burls, freddie and jose to have a chance to win that series. Should be fun.

McCarthy is being used where he is needed the MOST. That is NOT underutilizing a pitcher.

Plus the bullpen experience made Buerhle a much better pitcher by giving him a wider arsenal of pitches, I imagine that McCarthy will leave this year for next in the same position. Do not knock a rookies first year being in the pen. If he continues to perform this way, he will be in the rotation next year. But he is needed in the pen NOW.

By the way I was at the game. It was classic 2005 big john performance. I think the key is he is pitching inside again. He had a couple of bad pitches and got hurt (the double and homerun). But kept it to a mininum since he was pitching so well.

Also Ozzie did take him out at the right time. He pitched long enough where he feel like he was not being shorted, and he had a garunteed win.

Lip, I know you know that as a sinkerball pitcher, as a matter of course Garland relies on his defense to make plays.

Yeah, the postgame threads tend to be longer--and funnier--after a loss; the one was all the "Airplane!" references was a hoot. But that's OK. Keep the wins coming.

Nice to see Garland sharp and good innings from the pen. Guillen said he pulled Garland early (after 86 pitches) to ensure a "positive outing". And you've got to give McCarthy and Jenks some work. I thought it was a good move.

And Thome has scored a run in every game; the longest such streak to start a season in MLB since Big Frank in 1994. Mercy!

Man, the Royals are bad. Like men vs. boys. I don't need to remind you that their only two wins are against us. Shows that we just weren't all there that week.

I'm anxious to see Javy bounce back. We should be seeing brooms in about 5 hours. Hopefully we do, because we have Johan to deal with next game.

Great win. JG had his offspeed stuff completely fooling guys tonight. So many off balance and out in front swings. Lots of grounders and a fair number of K's.

Heck of a job all around.

You ain't running away with the division, I don't care how many runs you score, toons...

Frater:

I was talking about Dye's throw-out of Sweeney at second and Anderson's catch on Sanders (the next hitter). If those two things don't happen Kansas City had a run in and the makings of an inning.

No doubt... it certaintely worked for Johan Santana.

Which is why the Twins are doing it with Liriano now.
