The only concern i have is what are we going to do with him when we play at the NL fields, or God willing get back to the series? The beauty of 2005 is that we didn't really need Carl, we didn't depend onhim, Thome we will depend on....Hafner and Ortiz play 1st when they go against NL teams, obviously we can't do that with Paulie....it's cause for concern

I can see Ozzie switching it up once in a while at first depending on the pitching match ups. But for the most part I think you'll see Thome coming off the bench in the later innings. Doubt Ozzie wants to risk anything with Thome playing the field.

Having too many players is never a bad thing.

I heard Thome throws a sick curve ball. So there's always that...

Same issue we had with Thomas, but with the NL fields we are going to in the regular season being Pittsburgh and Cincinnatti, I'm not too worried. I guess we can see who's hotter, since Thome doesn't have a problem playing first

Agreed. This is a high-class problem. I think he'll be the best player coming off the bench in MLB. He'll probably win a game off the bench. Or three :gulp:

Konerko used to be a 3B. Put him there, Crede at short, and Thome at first. Then, Uribe can play CF because Anderson sucks. There you go!!!!! Problem solved.

...Thome doesn't have a problem playing first
Didn't Ozzie say toward the end of Spring Training that Thome would only play first base "in an emergency situation"? Gload is very good defensively, though I can't see them sitting both Paulie and Thome at the same time. My guess is they'll start Konerko in every NL park game, and have Thome first off the bench, ready to pinch-hit (and make opposing managers/relievers crap their pants).

I was going to say save him for a run-producing situation, but it occurred to me that every Thome at-bat is a run-producing situation, even with the bases empty!

Exactly. It's not going to be a total loss there, so they will definitely just play who is hot, or who has the better matchup. Which, if you are playing the Pirates or Reds, Chris Widger at every position would win 19-2...

Give it another few years. The NL will be adding one sooner rather than later because they are getting sick of getting crushed in the Series.

The Players Association will never let MLB do away with the DH because it is an above average salary slot. That means the NL will add the position eventually or the disparity will continue...

The REAL question is what will Ozzie do in Games 3 & 4 of the WS?

I think when that time comes it will be Ozzies chance to give them breaks. Switching off with Konerko and Thome.

KW said that Thome wouldn't be ready to play firstbase until midseason. I am guessing Konerko will start every game in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and they will give Thome more time to rest. However, I would imagine that come World Series time, Thome will face a right handed pitcher and Konerko will face a lefty. I guess that depends on how confident they are with Thome at first. Konerko has pretty poor range at first, but he is very good when it comes to picking balls in the dirt, and we all know how important defense is.

Hopefully he goes with the hot bat. If Thome is crushing the ball, I don't want to see him on the bench for 7+ innings. But hey, that is problem Ozzie will just have to deal with. Can Thome catch?

Ok... we're looking way, way, way, way into the future here...

But that does sort of scare me, having to sit Thome or Konerko in every away game during a World Series.

Sure, it makes Thome/Konerko the "Best Pinch Hitter In History" for a day... but that's not a good thing. That means for 3-4 at bats, they sit.

Is there no other position one of them can play, in any way shape or form?

Even if Thome is the third-best first baseman on the Sox, he is better than Thomas was in 2000, when the Mariners forced a play at Thomas because they knew it would win them Game 3 of the ALDS.

What about having Konerko catch for the day? Didn't that one article way back when rate him as a better catcher than Pierzynski anyway?

If that happened, there wouldn't be much of a difference between the American and National Leagues.

Just like there is a huge difference between the AFC and NFC in football?

They were talking about that on the radio and said that Kenny and Ozzie want to wait for a while to put him at first to make sure his elbow is all good.

Are you thinking like, Agents Smith in the Matrix Reloaded? That would be awesome! Can you imagine the entire field filled with Jim Thomes?

Thome used to be a 3B, maybe he can go there?

Or anyone struggling can be benched, sans Uribe or Iguchi.

Then again, Paulie used to catch, he could move there, JT can go to first, ....ah, never mind...

I can hear the PA announcement: "Batting third, the CF, #25, Jim Thome!!"

I guess it's a good thing to have such problems. I remember Frank and Paulie having key sucessful PH appearances in similar situations. maybe JT can goin them.
