It is absolutely sickening whats going on here.
The Chicago Media continues going HOG WILD regarding the "hot" start the cubs are on this season, and its showing regarding the level of media coverage theyre getting, despite finishing in 4th place last season. The White Sox actually started the season in 1st place (never relinquishing and winning the World Series) last season and were equally as "hot", yet they were not as lucky with the exceeding levels of media coverage. Last season, the media chose instead to give the 3rd place in 2004 Cubs the majority of Media Coverage. As we see, just when there seems to be some rhyme and reason to the rules the Media uses in covering the teams, they change right away. Nice story today on BMcCarthy in the SunTimes.

Whats the biggest story in the Trib today? Well, judging by the huge, full-color, 1/2 the entire newspaper picture of The Messiah............throwing a Towel! Did I just see that right? The SOX won the WS in 05, and are relegated to page 3 in favor of a Full Color, almost the entire front page, of The Messiah throwing a Towel?

What is the most sickening story today? Rick "Cubpoganda" Morrisseys repulsive piece today is even worse than anything else hes ever written. He is still talking about last sundays cardinal giveaway, hailing the fans as "true believers" and how this season is already special. Just barely 1 Week into the season, and with a 4-2 record, Morrissey and the rest of the media are peeing-their-pants collectively. Sure, he interrupts himself throughout the article saying its "too early" to be this excited, yet he continues on and on. He obviously had this article penned loss-be-damned, comparing April 9th to Oct 19 in the world series, saying the game had that kind of atmosphere, and how the "ESPN camera shook". Yeah Rick, that happened here in Chicago when Konerko hit his slam. The Cell was thunderous, unfortuneately, the networks did a pretty good job censoring the audio mikes. Utterly disturbing the love the Chicago Media has for a losing franchise.

Despite winning the World Series in 2005, The SOX inexplicably find themselves far far behind in media coverage, losing the coverage to a team that, won nothing last year, hasnt won anything since 1908, and finished in 4th place.

Chicago Tribune:
7 cub stories
2 sox stories
Chicago SunTimes:
6 cub stories
2 sox stories
Standings for Tuesday April 11th, 2006
Priviledged, Media-Owned, Media Favored, 4th place in 2005 CUBS 237
Underdog, Media maligned, Media Ignored, WS Champs in 2005 SOX 206

Hangar, if the cubs were to be sold to an owner or ownership group that didn't own a media giant, would you think that the bias would subside? If yes, would the writers simply change their tunes or would they be replaced by journalists with some sort of integrity over time?

I think the damage has been done. The SOX deserve some of the blame, this garbage didnt happen overnite. The SOX were having sand kicked in their faces and ignored it saying it wasnt a big deal, they didnt have to "compete" with them. Well, we see now just how FOOLISH that decision truly was. For things to turn around, it would have to take The Trib to cease ownership, they will NEVER be objective when covering both teams, preferring to side with the cubs every time. book that. Then ...........
we would have to have, the same media slant against them and get the overwhelming coverage for about 2 decades ............... just to offset the damage done. Then, only then would things be equal.

The SOX winning the World Series was HUGE. We just need to win another one, while sustaining a decent team. We see what a 4-2 start can do for a team. Its downright embarrassing the way the media behaves, like a small-town podunk newspaper covering its high-school team

The next time the Sox have a game and the Cubs don't, we'll see if the Sox get a 10-1 margin of articles.

I don't know if this was mentioned yesterday but I was reading the Tribune yesterday and in Fred Mitchells column he was talking about how steroid allegations might hurt some peoples Hall chances. He mentioned by name: Barry Bonds, Raphael Palmeiro, Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, can anyone guess who he conviently forgot to mention?

To be fair to Fred, one of these people have admitted to taking sterioids, one was caught and two the evidence is pretty damming that they did. All there is with Sosa is speculation.

I see your point but Canseco has zero chance of getting into the Hall of Fame, even before he wrote his book.

Rick Morrissey is a joke.

It's one thing for the Tribune Company to be horribly biased, and there's no excuse for it, but it's sad how many other media members from other outlets produce the same one-sided garbage. Carol Slezak in particular needs her column taken away from her. George "Jim Hendry's shoeshine boy" Offman and Mike Murphy need to be fired.

Is it any wonder why the Tribune's stock is tumbling and the Score is mired in mediocre ratings?

If any members of the Tribune and Sun-Times read this, I'd like to hear you explain why the Cubs still receive more stories.

Rick Morrissey is a journalistic embarrassment. I like how his piece today PRE Rationalizes things by saying "i know its way early", but he keeps on and on. We are 6 games into this, and his pants are urine-soaked with glee, and the suburban kubby klowns grab their Garciaparra and Prior jerseys, and head to Garden of Eden. hahhhahahahahahahahaaha.

yup.....and, think about it. The Trib owns the team, they want to give the Flubs as much positive coverage as possible, it is just another form of advertising.....have to keep those stockholders happy with a fat profit!! There is no way in hell the Trib will ever not be biased, unless they let go of the Cubs ownership. They have a financial interest in being biased.

(I am sure this is nothing that hasn't been said before, so forgive me for being redundant)

also, I haven't seen the paper yet today.....but just the imagery I am getting from reading the towel thread has me rolling on the floor!!!

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the shot Morrissey took at the loyalty of Sox fans:

It's too early to say whether the Cubs are any good, just as it's too early to declare The Cell a disaster area after the Sox's shaky start (though many Sox fans have).

In contrast, here's what he says about Cubs fans and their booing on Tuesday:

Sunday showed that, despite the increase in sophistication levels, it's still Wrigley, it's still the North Side and it's still about hope—wonderful, ridiculous hope.

Tuesday showed that fans are sick of waiting.

I'm sorry Rick, but, exactly which Sox fans are these that have "declared the Cell a disaster area" ? Last time I checked, yes, we were disappointed at the 1-4 start, but we all knew it was THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SEASON. As you wrote that article, the Sox had won 2 in a row and improved a bit to 3-4. Unlike the blue lemmings that fill the Urinal, and you and your cohorts at The Tower, we don't start printing WS tix after the 1st week of April, just like we don't jump off ledges after 5 games, now more so than ever, coming off that whole "WHITE SOX WINNING THE 2005 WORLD SERIES" thingie. Please, Rick, (or should I call you "The Viper"), wipe some of that smugness off your face, as well as the Blue Kool-Aid mustache. Oh, by the way, Denny Fitz called. He wants you to pick up his stuff at the cleaners on your way back from getting coffee and donuts for him.

So why should anybody be suprised or bothered that they give more coverage to the team that they own? If we are going to obsess over the amount of coverage in the newspapers, should we at least let the Trib go, and only care about the one that is supposed to be 'baseball independent,' in its coverage?

Just seems like a waste of time to harp on the Tribune for this.

Exactly what I was thinking while reading this piece of crap. Right, many Sox fans have decided that the season is over after less than 10 games. What a pathetic joke of a column.

It's not a waste of time. The Trib is very influential as the biggest paper in this city and one of the largest in the nation. Why should they get a free pass especially when they continue to tell everyone how unbiased they are. Plus the fact that they're supposed to be a legitimate unbiased news organization I don't see how you can just give them a free pass to do whatever they want whenever.

So ............following Rick Morrisseys logic:
When SOX fans boo = Sox Fans give up, are too pessimisstic
When Cub fans boo = Cub Fans are Passionate, ever so optimistic

Ive just about had it with this guy, hes making Mike Kiley look good ........

Whether its the number of Cub stories they run or having their columnists purposely attack the White Sox and their fans in print and on air, it is obvious the Tribune Corporation has a vested interest in hyping the Cubs and trying to destroy the White Sox.

We can fight back by calling them out on the hypocrisy of their "objective journalism" and by boycotting their products.

I've considered other forms of protests, but extremists, socialists and anarchists have taken all the good ones...or at least ones the media would notice.

A couple of things in that article trouble me. Morrissey mentions "the increase in sophistication levels" at Wrigley. Yet another attempt at trying to make Cubs fans look like the greatest in the world. Also, he says Dusty finished off the Cardinals sweep with Sean Marshall. Excuse me, but did Marshall have a decision that game? No, he didn't. It was Scott Williamson. Get your facts straight before you write this crap.
