well said, only the 4th game. We did blow a 6 run lead, but hopefully the weather conditions will be better and our guys will be a little smarter on defense as well. Hopefully Javy has a great 1st start in a Sox uni.

It may only be the fourth game of the season, but in this division you can lose any chance early. When do you suggest we start pointing out the poor performance of our team? All I'd like to see is proper execution and heads up ball. For world champs we sure haven't played like it yet. It may be early, but other teams sure seem to be getting with the program and playing ball above a triple a level.

Not to be a smartass but perhaps Ozzie will consider sticking with a set lineup for a few days. These guys need reps, they didn't get much in the spring.

But the big question is, what the hell happened to the starting pitching?????

Garland looked very Judy tonight. The thing that set him apart last year was his ability (finally) to overcome problems behind him and get outs. He couldn't do that tonight. The sinker was WAY up.

What the hell is wrong with the defense? IIRC, that was one of the cornerstones of the team last year. Pablo's butchery, Anderson missing that fly (with Rob Mackowiak NOWHERE near backing up), Thornton throwing the pickoff throw wide, and Konerko unable to get the ball to Widger. What the hell is going on?

The only real beef you have there is Ozuna. Widger is playing against a lefty, the night before a day game and Dye is hurt so Mack has to play. Now Ozuna sucked big time so its a pretty big beef but I don't have a problem with anyone else.

A long long time ago
I can still remember how Nancy's music made me smile
And I knew if the Sox had the chance
That all the fans would really dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But April made me shiver
With every pitch they'd deliver
Bad news on Jerry's doorstep
Ozzie couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if Judy cried
When I read about him as the Royals bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day Smart Ball died

So, bye-bye, Merry White Sox Pride
Drove my chevy to the levee
Cus the dark clouds were alive
And Farmer and Rooney were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Smart BalI died
This'll be the day Smart Ball died

Another distrubing trend is this...more two out RBI hits by the Royals tonight. Just in the 4th inning three runs crossed after two were gone.

I expected a sluggish start and said so, but I didn't expect this the first week. Two bad losses and a pissed away game on Wednesday.

Championship hangover my ass! I had a feeling this crap would happen because the team would be stuck in 2005 and wouldn't be used to wearing the bullseye on their backs.

HOWEVER, a championship hangover doesn't include botching routine plays and playing dumb. This whole defense issue needs to get right and in a hurry.

I know the whole thought process of not giving up outs on the road, but why in the hell wouldn't you bunt two guys over in the eighth with no outs and the middle of your order coming up?

It's so funny...every year, I have to remove this big black scuff area off of one place on my wall, because my habit after bad losses is to throw shoes.

From the official post-game story by Scott Merkin on whitesox.com:

"The five-run fourth actually could have been limited to one run if not for Emil Brown's fly ball to Pablo Ozuna in left field turning into a double."

Interesting choice of words.....

Although in fairness he does make two references to the wind causing most of those runs.

Last July with Garland on the mound the Sox also pissed away a five run lead. I think Gload had a big error to cause it.

Like I said the Royals gave the Sox hell the second half of last season and that is apparently continuing.

Two out of three to Royals isn't a good series.

2 out of 3 against any team is a good series. You can't expect perfection. Ofcourse they have to win 2 of the games still.

Guys, Cleveland is ok, but this isn't the greatest division in the history of team sports that everyone is making it out to be. We used our real lineup ONCE, and kicked Cleveland's ass. CC is hurt for them, the Twins after Santana don't scare me, and as someone said earlier, the Tigers and Royals are gonna be under .500 sooner or later as well. The starters can't get any worse, and we played two HORSE**** games in a row and BARELY lost to the superior Indians in extra innings, and scored 7 runs tonight. Yes, the starters have sucked and Ozuna and Gload don't belong anywhere near an outfield. We're a little shorthanded right now but I'm still confident.

I think Ozzie will use this fact and point to last year as reason enough to get it in gear, fast! It's not easy to make up ground when you get yourself 10 plus games out of first. Not saying that is what is going to happen, but it could in this division.

I'm not worried about the pitching because we have a very good starting 5. They will come into their own as the season goes on. Some people would think that the weather right now would fit into the pitchers hands, but look where 4 of our 5 starters are from...warm weather places. They'll heat it up soon. I am not worried about our team, in general, right now. For God's sake, it is only the 4th game of the year.

Garland had that one bad inning that he managed to avoid pretty much all of last season, which wasn't at all helped by Ozuna's misplay in left.

I just got a call from my uncle in San Diego who's at the Padres game and was watching the out-of-town scoreboard intently. While I've frequently hucked the remote into the couch and said the MF word over the years thanks to the Sox and the 2005 Packers, the real temptress in the house is the customized Louisville Slugger bat given to my wife and I for our wedding from my best man that leans against a chair in our living room at all times. Ohhh...so that explains their horrible start last year. It's the geographic origin of each of the starting pitchers.

No. Garcia and Garland both screwed the pooch. That's it. Garland was untouchable at the beginning of last year. Garcia was nearly as good. It would help if they got a little consistency behind them defensively, but in all honesty the pitching hasn't been good. The main culprit is probably focus. It looks like the team is sleepwalking. They came out gangbusters today, but lost focus after the lead. If this isn't a wake up call, I don't know what is.

In the back of my mind I knew this wasn't the first time the Sox really stunk up the joint in Kansas City. Last September immediately came to mind, but that's not the game. This was:

Game Played on Monday, April 15, 1996 (N)

at Kauffman Stadium

CHI A (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/TCHA01996.htm) 5 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 11 14 2
KC A (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/TKCA01996.htm) 0 6 0 1 0 0 1 2 0 - 10 11 0

At least they won that one after blowing a ten run lead. Again Sox killers Brown and Sweeney at it again tonight.

Look the folks are right...the Sox are going to lose games...but the issue here is the WAY they are losing games. Listless, lifeless, no fundamentals, pissing away games. That is not Sox baseball. That's the way the Sox played in 1973, 1984 and 2001.

That game was lost as soon as Ozuna biffed that wind-blown fly into left. Maybe putting an outfielder in the outfield will help tomorrow.

I agree totally. I don't mind the different lineups as much, if they are in their best positions. Ozuna is not a quality outfielder. I think we definatly need a consistant lineup out there.

Garland should have only had 4 ER. He wasn't the goat. Ozuna stuck in a position he doesn't usually play on a windy night. No goats here.

Ya, Ozuna should never have been out there, but when 2 of your starters are out that is what happens. Man this was rough to watch. After the 1st inning I was like this is going to be a hitting clinic that will get em back on pace, I was wrong. Get them tommorow. I predict a good one for vasquez.

Quote of the night had to come from DJ after a replay of the Ozuna dropped fly..."There's Ozuna, waving off the bullpen."

I know it's probably habit to do that just like sometimes you go to fake a lay up even when your all alone under the hoop, but it was comical to see him waving "nobody" off the way he did.

Seriously, ozzie needs to stick with a lineup and go with it. Put the regulars in and run with it. Only team in the majors that has had 4 different lineups in 4 games.

John became a headcase as the game went on. The first 3 innings he was lights out, striking out the side in the first inning, one on base in the second and nothing in the third. Like the hawk says, "the dreaded leadoff walk." It comes back to haunt us every time.

All righty. I didn't see the game. However, reading through this thread and looking at the boxscore, I've got a good idea of what happened. For those concerned about Pods, just realize that during an offseason that saw Garland, Contrereas, AJ, and Mackowiack get new deals, Pods didn't get one, despite an All-Star appearance.

As for the rest of this, yeah, yeah, we're four games in. I'll bet there are teams that started 1-3 that have won the WS. Plus, KC wasn't going 0-162, right?

I've already brought that up. I can see Ozzie playing the 'never-was' and 'never will be's' in early March but these asswipes were in the games the final week of the spring! Even in Atlanta...

I look up and see Vallario bothching a throw at second or booting a ground ball and I'm thinking 'what the hell is going on here?' Why are the regulars on the bench the final week of the season in the 6th or 7th inning?

Ozzie says he wants to see all the kids and how they perform. My response is if you have to rely on them in the first place come July you are in deep dung anyway. The point is get the guys who are going to make a difference ready to go.

There are times when I think maybe Daver had it right all along about Ozzie...we'll see. I'm beginning to get uneasy over his Manager Gandhi like tendencies.

The loss itself is no big deal....our record w/out Dye/AJ and Pods is probably not stellar. I don't mind Ozzie being extra careful with the injuries...playing in cold/wind/rain in April is an unnecessary risk...especially with older, somewhat injury prone players like Pods and Dye.

Two concerns:

We're clearly missing a RH hitting OF off the bench. The ball will find Ozuna whenever he's out there. When Dye is out we have to go with Machowiak even against LHP's...looks to me like a fine tuning opportunity for the roster.
Our next quality start will be our first. Probably more bad starts already then we had the whole month of April last year.Positives from tonight:

Konerko had a good night.
Thornton shows promise.

My brief thoughts (without depressing myself reading the thread).

1. Ozuna should play infield only. Adam Dunn or Dave Kingman can give him pointers out there.

2. I hope Dye returns shortly and Podsednik is healthy enough to run (and bunt his way on if need be).

3. The only thing I was worried about this Spring was the bullpen and I hope Kenny is able to swing a deal at some point. Hermanson looks done and the bullpen can use the help - they were the most overlooked part of our success last year.

Mama told me there would be days like these. :(:

With all due respect, I think that's beside the point. We're all happy they won the World Series, but how much longer are we supposed to excuse a loss with that? Don't ge me wrong, I know it's early and this is too good a team to keep playing this way, but I don't see anything wrong with people being frustrated and expressing their concerns. When a team plays like **** its normal for the fans to be upset, regardless of how many games into the season it is.

Ozuna and Garland have to be the goats tonight..

How can you blame Ozuna? It was Ozzies call to put an infielder into outfield....what ever happened to Ozzie Ball? To Grinder baseball? Why didn't we have a pinch runner in for Thome to get some speed in the Ninth that helps to break the Pitchers concentration against the batters?

These are strange days my firends when the others teams are playing our game better than us!

Some silver linings:

- Maybe it's not so bad to get a little losing over with early to quit being "defending" champs and get back to being "attacking" champs.

- Mackowiak's catch -- after they had blown a 6-run lead and after he had messed up on the preceding play. (Grinder ball)

- Thome drawing a walk to lead off the ninth down by 4. (Ozzie ball)

They'll be fine.

Does this game remind anyone of the Oakland series last year? We made defensive error after defensive error, and we're being nagged by little injuries. Remember when we didn't have enough infielders, so Dye had to play SS for an inning?

Seems to me that nothing is going our way right now, and I think they can turn it around. Don't forget that the Royals, while still bad, are better than they were last year...and you cannot take any major league ballclub for granted, they're still major league ballplayers.

After this embarrassment of a game, I think they will turn it up tomorrow and come back the Sox we saw in 2005. Not whatever we saw yesterday, that team can go away, far away. Keep in mind that we're only 1-3, a few wins and you'll all be on cloud nine again...just relax it's going to be a long ride, and we're going to win this damn division.

Well yeah, a lot of bad teams will start out 1-3. The whole point is, we are not a bad team, and there are a ton of good teams that started 1-3 and succeeded. 1-3 means absolutely nothing...it's not like no one is going to have this kind of game against us this year, every team has its bad games. Every team in baseball will have their fair share of bad games, you cannot say, "we need to win these games now," it's only a three game losing streak. If we'd have lost these last three games midseason, it woudn't be a big deal to you guys, but you feel that we have to win every single game. We got off to a fast start last year, you shouldn't have gotten your hopes up that we were going to do the same this year. Actually, there's still time to have a fast start...who's to say we won't win our next 10 games?

We will be fine.

I am not blaming this loss on anything, but I was at the game last night, and you guys don't know how cold and windy it really was. Not that we haven't played in that weather before, but this was terrible. If Pods was playin last night we don't miss that fly ball that Pablo dropped and the Royals never get 5 runs that inning, probably 2 runs would've scored. So we'll just get'em today in Javy's debut.

It wasn't until September last year that the scuffed spot got bad. It was soothing to break it in tonight.

Baseball's back. WSI is coming back to earth a little, too. I love it.

Whenever I get the urge to throw something bad--like a hammer--Mr.Mary Swiss knows it's his job to take it away and give me something good to throw--like a paperback book or a pillow. I mean, why destroy a perfectly good big-screen TV?

However, I'm not sure having a big-screen TV is all it's cracked up to be anyway. It just seems to make miserable games like last night's harder to watch.

I get to miss most of today's game due to volleyball practice, and I plan on remembering last night's game every time I take a swing. Good therapy!

I'm too lazy to look it up but I think the list of teams that started out 1-3 and didn't win anything would be a little longer.
Well let's see...

For the first 68 years of existence, the AL sent exactly ONE team to the playoffs every year. With an average of 8 teams in the league over that stretch, the odds are good that about 3 every year averaged a 1-3 start or worse.

Then the league expanded to 12 teams and started sending 2 teams to the playoffs every year and the odds are that 4 teams got off to a 1-3 or worse start. This period lasted for about 25 years.

Now there are 14 teams and 4 playoff positions, so there are still 5 teams a year averaging a 1-3 start or worse. This has been the case for the last 13 years with no playoffs in one of them - call it 12 years.

That means there were a minimum of 136+50+12 = 198 teams that started out that way and didn't make the playoffs (if every single team who had a poor start after 4 games DID make it that is).

So what's my point?

I don't have one, but neither do you and neither did the guy who pointed out that the list of teams who made it after 1-3 starts.

The point is that you cannot predict one damned thing about the way the season will go 4 games into the season. It's just not possible, PERIOD.

Everyone needs to step back from the ledge, take a deep breath and enjoy the ride. Last year was fun, right? Right now the Bears haven't even had the chance to lose their first game. The Sox are the equivalent of 5 minutes into the second quarter of the first game of the season in the NFL. I know some people are pessimists, but seems a bit extreme to jump off the bandwagon or even freak out at that point in the season to me...

Yeah.. something like that.. look, maybe I go against your point here; but if people are looking for reasons to come back off the ledge until may (or like june it their case) look to how the Astros started out last year. Granted, they were smoked by some other team in the WS, but they still made it. We'll be alright for a while guys. I know I was as frustrated as the next guy last night... but today's a new day!!!!

Exactly, this team is built to win a lot of games, don't let a few games get to you. Not only will we win a lot of games, but we will get stronger as the season moves on...unlike other teams like the Indians whose pitching will falter. We're a great team, and we're going to win the division...hang in there and stop whining.

I think that for the most part, the posts in this thread have been measured. There's nothing wrong with saying the Sox played a piss-poor game last night; they did. There will always be a few people who freak out completely--especially in a group the size of this one--but all in all, most of us know baseball, we know our team is solid, and we know it is wayyyy too early to panic. In fact, I'm hoping to track down my Indians fan friend soon, so I can sucker him into a bet! Couldn't get him to bite last year--despite all his crap about us choking down the stretch--but he's probably awash in that Cleveland kool-aid right now and should be a pushover.

Voodoo:

Can't argue with your post. My biggest concern though is the WAY they are losing games. Something just isn't right and I can't pinpoint it yet.

Konerko was right, this is not last year's team.

My hope is that this version doesn't turn out to be like the 1973, 1984 or 1995 version.

Historically the Sox do not seem to play well when they are the hunted and not the hunter. Maybe that's because so few times has the franchise in fact been the hunted.

We'll see... but there are some real issues right now that have to be worked through. From a slew of minor nagging injuries that didn't seem to happen until last July, to lousy friggin' weather (although BOTH teams have to play in it..) to a bullpen that in my opinion is worse then last season to 'championship hangover...'
