Rollins has eye on history
Shortstop enters 2006 season with 36-game hitting streak

If he succeeds, Rollins will be recognized as the holder of the longest hitting streak in Major League history, though DiMaggio will keep the single-season mark.

He had 677 AB's last season, and only had 47 BB's, along with 71 SO's. I suppose he'd qualify as a bible hitter; thou shalt not pass. I think it'd be great if he can break the 56-game record, but it's still unlikely.

I was wondering if they would make a separate entry in the record books for Rollins because he didn't do it in one season. I don't think we'll have to worry, though, because Rollins won't get there.

Jermaine Dye reached base safely four times last night (2 singles, 1 walk, then another single). Added to the Game 4 single in the 8th that drove in the winning run, that is five consecutive times reaching base safely. Anyone know the record?

Rollins is a very good player and I expect another excellent year from him. He'll need 8 to catch Rose's NL record and 9 to surpass it.

It's supposed to rain in Philly today- hopefully, the game doesn't get rained out just after it goes official and before he gets a full chance to continue the streak.

I believe the record is reaching safely in 15 straight at-bats. I think about 5+ years ago Frank Thomas came very close reaching base 13 out of 15 consecutive at-bats. Or was that a dream....?

16. Ted Williams.

Thanks. Rollins is 0 for 3 (just grounded out to first) in the bottom of the 5th. One or possibly two chances left to keep the streak alive.

I'm sure the Yankees never lost a game during DiMaggio's streak and I'm sure the Reds never lost a game during Rose's streak.

Shouldn't that be teal???

I'm sure there were games during Rose's streak where Rose didn't even bet on the Reds. (Is that teal enough?)

I read one story that said Rollins has a chance to break DiMaggio's record for consecutive games with a hit over two seasons. (World Series games don't count, of course, which would apply to DiMaggio.) It said he didn't have a chance to break DiMaggio's single-season mark. Really, though, if he hits in another 56 straight, he would do both.

Yes, but I think the sarcasm was easily enough detected.

If Rollins gets into the 40s, the media vultures will be all over him like a dead steer, and the added pressure will get to him. Di Maggio didn't get that kind of attention in 1941. That's one record that will never be broken, at least in my lifetime. I think that's the Holy Grail of baseball records.

I agree, that the Clipper's streak of 56 and Williams .400 will never be eclipsed in our modern times.

Rollins up.. he's the tying run.. 1 out.. Bottom 7th.. Cards lead 4-2..

Foul, flyout to Edmonds..

He's 0-4.. could be done but may... may have a chance in the 9th.. but the Phillies would have to get going..
