Bad luck for Reed, but Borchard's luck has suddenly done a 180.

So by my count, after having a wrist injury in 2004 (not sure which one), he was then diagnosed with a torn left wrist tendon in late '05 (cutting his season short), and follows it up with a broken right wrist in 2006 ST.

What's more delicate, Wood's shoulder, Prior's elbow, or Reed's wrists?

Maybe they can offer him up for a pitcher like Freddy Garcia?

(I keed, I keed, please let's not restart that old debate)

Too bad for Reed, I for one, never like to see a player get injured. It is also good fortune for Joe Borchard, who I always thought was a class act.

I think if he gets a full season something like 20-25 HR and 50-70 RBI might be more likely. He's never really been a big RBI guy. Totally with you on the average and K's.

I think Lawton gets first crack at starting. Borchard at least starts the first week while Lawton is on steroid suspension and then probably becomes the primary backup for the duration of Reed's absence. Probably now on pace for 200-300 AB if he stays on the team and possibly more if Lawton has another poor season.

The news this is probably really good for is Michael Morse. He was on the bubble before this and now he probably makes the team as a fifth OF/backup IF

In other news, future hall of famer Miguel Olivo will probably ride the pine again with his 5th team.
Miguel Olivo went 0-for-4 on Friday and is just 6-for-38 this spring.
Here's one reason it looks like the Marlins are going to start Josh Willingham behind the plate. Olivo still figures to have some value in NL-only leagues, but he might not play a lot early on.

I too thought this would be good news for Borchard, but none of the stories about Reed that I read out of Seattle even mentioned Borchard. Stories talked about moving Bloomquist or Morse to the outfield and Ichiro to center, but they didn't mention Borchard.

Really, I would love to see Borchard hit 30 home runs (if only to read the anguish at WSI), but I don't know if he'll get the chance.

He seems like he is being considered but Hargrove is already starting up the usual complaints about Borchard needing to shorten his swing.

Use Joe Borchard in center field or in right field (if Ichiro moves to center). The Mariners recently acquired Borchard in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, and he played center field against the White Sox on Friday afternoon, making a couple plays defensively and going 0 for 3 at the plate.

Hargrove said he likes Borchard's speed but that he needs to shorten his swing. Hitting was Borchard's problem in the White Sox organization.

"It seems to be a good opportunity for me," said Borchard, who played center field for three years in the minors.
article (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2002887984_mari25.html)

I think the position he'll ultimately end up with is defensive sub. With guys like Ibanez, Lawton and Morse around they'll need one. It won't be Morse getting the job, I can tell you that. He wasn't even going to be on the roster before Reed got hurt.

He won't get the chance to hit 30, at least this year, he won't get the ABs. If he has a strong year though he might get a chance down the road.

Hey what is it with Sox minor league outfielders and wrists? This is Reed's second wrist injury, Anderson's had on again off again wrist problems, Sweeney had his last year, and I believe CYoung is out with a hand or wrist problem. Are we scouting guys who have bad wrists or is this like the Giants used to be where Roger Craig taught everyone the forkball and two years later they all blew out their elbows? Is there such a thing as the "fork swing"?

Wouldn't it be freaking hilarious if Borchard found a way to turn it around and Reed never produced any kind of serious numbers?

All those FOBB's wouldn't know what to do with themselves. I bet jeremyb1's head would explode...

Speaking of jeremyb1, I found this at that steaming pile of **** he calls a blog:

It would be incredibly easy for me to analyze this trade to the point of excess. Aside from a few brief comments about Javier Vazquez and a discussion of the money changing hands in the deal, I intend to spend this entry explaining why over the last several months I informed the Sox fans I hold dear that 1) Chris Young had become my favorite White Sox player 2) I could tolerate virtually any move Kenny Williams made over the offseason as long as he did not deal Chris Young 3) Chris Young is an elite prospect who should not be lumped together with Brian Anderson, Chris Owens, and Ryan Sweeney despite the fact that all four players are worthwhile prospects.

Interesting article on how the significance alone reflects on the M's.

Reed expected to play in 6 days. Borchy's 25th man slot is in jeopardy again. Expect him to make it but then have to pass thru waivers to go to AAA when Lawton returns.

If Kenny wants him back he'll be able to claim him then for Charlotte.

I think some other team would grab him off Waivers before the sox got the chance. The Marlins have had their eye on him and they would get a crack at him before the sox would.

I actually expect him to stick around at least for defense and his outfield arm. Reed and Suzuki are fine but the other guys, Lawton and Ibanez, are hardly capable defenders. I don't expect Borchard to swing the bat much though.

Michael Morse got sent down to AAA as well today and he was Borchard's main competition for a roster spot. So it at least seems like he will make the roster for the start of the season.

After ten days when Lawton comes back it looks like the Mariners will have to decide whether to retain Borchard or Roberto Petagine who also seems to have made the roster.

I would have to think Petagine would be going since I don't see a need for a backup 1b/DH type with Ibanez, Sexson, and Everett on the roster.
