There was an article about trying to find the ballgame of a game featured in a movie / TV show on retrosheet on BP Prospectus. The author mentioned Ferris Buhler's day off and based on what was seen in the movie, the game took place June 5, 1985 (some of you were not even born :o: ). Of course the Cubs lost 4-2 (via two runs scored in the ninth off of Lee Smith) and the Cub fans (Ferris and friends) were happy nonetheless.

That concludes today's edition of time out for trivia.

Obviously there was too much to do in Chicago to stay for the whole game. They may have newer known the final score.

Where's that Ed Rooney graphic?...anyone?...anyone?...anyone?

Ed Rooney (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000470/): What's the score?
Pizza Joint Owner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0896649/): Nothin' nothin'.
Ed Rooney (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000470/): [not really listening] Who's winning?
Pizza Joint Owner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0896649/): The Bears.

I won't put up his graphic however. He is a registered sex offender after pleading no contest to a felony charge of hiring a 14 year old boy to pose for sexually explicit photos.

Also interesting to note what the probable starting time of that game was, considering they went to a parade afterward.

Could you picture a parade in the heart of the Loop at 3-4 in the afternoon during a normal business day? No way.

The cubs also had some of those wierd 3:05pm. games back then.

Not to mention those two gals suntanning at 6pm in what was supposed to be March, I believe? Even in July no one suntans in Chicago at 6pm, right?

But yes, I liked it too, even own a copy.

Its on right now as well. I tuned it right when they went to the Cub game. When they pan the stadium, you can see a VERY empty upper level.

You also caught me in a sloppily edited post. Sorry for stating the obvious so badly.

Coincidently, this movie pops up all the time on another forum I'm a member of - I'm on the Fiero forum (fiero.nl) and everytime the movie airs someone starts a new topic "Hey did you see Ferris's sister drives a Fiero?". Its been posted so often its becoming a running joke of sorts.

I read that John Hughes was a Sox fan but they were out of town during the days they were filming... I know the Janitor in the Breakfast Club has a Sox shirt on.

Correct. Those of you who own the DVD just need to turn the director commentary on and skip to the beginning of the Wrigley scene to discover where director John Hughes Chicago baseball loyalties lie. He is indeed a Sox fan. He stated that the scene was originally intended to be shot at Old Comiskey Park at a Sox game but the Sox were out of town and played mostly night games anyway. They needed a day game and they were on a tight shooting schedule so a Cubs game had to suffice. Hughes stated he was happy with how the shots turned out in the movie (and Matthew Broderick is also a Cubs fan apparently) but his commentary in the DVD stated regretfully that "unfortunately, it was the wrong team".

Hughes made up for it in the John Candy film "Only The Lonely" which features a great scene with Candy and Ally Sheedy on a date that takes place on the grass at Old Comiskey. They even light up the scoreboard.

In the directors commentary, Hughes says he is a Red Wings fan. He also says "Never was a Cubs fan, never will be, but the Sox weren't playing day games." If they had been, their stadium would have been empty too.

Glad to know it was filmed on an actual game day, because all I ever hear is how wrigley is always full. Oh well guess not. The full stadium now must all be scammy bandwaggon jumpers.
