Thought it would be easier to see what the Sox were doing in a thread here. I put spoilers in the title since some of the games are tape delayed (Like the Puerto Rico game today being shown at 2 am on ESPN with not everyone getting ESPN Deportes).

3/7/06
Javier Vazquez started against Panama.
3+ innings (pitched to 2 batters in the 4th). 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. He threw 57 pitches, 36 of which were strikes.

The 1 run was one of the runners Feerico Baez inherited in the 4th, he walked it in.

Freddy Garcia didn't pitch.

Don't worry, I don't think many people are planning to sit back, relax and strap it down for the 1:30 a.m. broadcast of the Puerto Rico-Panama game. just a hunch...

I watched the replay on MLB.TV. Javy looked pretty good out there.

How about South Africa barely losing to Canada. They were up 8-7 in the 9th when Canada put up 4 runs to win 11-8. Every Canadian player is in the big leagues. None of the South Africans are. That would have been the biggest upset of the tournament so far.

I know that the stats have always been this way but why does getting two batters out amount to .2 innings? Shouldn't it be .66?

You are correct .2 is one tenth, not two thirds. Two thirds should be .67 (rounding up from the 6's going on into infinity)

.2 is actually one fifth.

I just forgot that the Sox signed Ruben Rivera http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=67191&highlight=ruben+rivera

He just hit a 3 run home run to put Panama ahead of Cuba.

Yesterday while playing CF against Puerto Rico, he went 2-3 with a walk, double, and strikeout

Saw that too, good deep blast to RF. Although that pitcher was looking pretty suspect.

South Africa had 17-year-old kids playing in that game.

Amazing that they were able to keep it close, much less have a chance to win it.

I've been looking all day, does anyone have any idea who's starting for the US today?

I just want to put it out there that I have done a 180 the last week in the WBC, I can't get enough. Yesterday's games were great, the Cuba/Panama game I'm watching right now has been fantastic. I get off right before the first pitch of U.S./Canada. I just hope the bar has that and the Sox game on.

Dontrelle Willis. I also now can't get enough of it. I still worry about effects into late into the season for the pitchers, but that'll remain to be seen. The thing I love is seeing the passion from both fans/players (intense/taking this seriously) and the talent I wouldn't otherwise see (Korea, Japan, Cuba, etc)

Thank you, the WBC website is such a joke, I couldn't find anything.

The WBC section on the ESPN website has had everything I have been looking for.

What is everyone's thoughts on the game times for the first round. Personally, I'm really disappointed. I've been one of the few looking forward to this thing for a long time. I can't watch any of the 1st round US games because they are Weekday Day games. If you are trying to launch a new Baseball tourney, don't you want the maximum exposure? Late afternoon Tues/Wed/Fri starts are not the way to do this...most people have day jobs...

I guess I'll watch Puerto Rico v Netherlands tonight. I caught bits and pieces of the Asian pool games...but not enough to get a good taste.

Here's to watching the next round, I guess. :gulp:

10 outs, 7 K's. Granted, it's Italy, not exactly loaded with major leaguers (other than Piazza unless I'm forgetting a whole slew of them...definitely possible). But impressive numbers all the same.

oh, but Freddy isn't a power pitcher. We need someone like Wood, Prior and Zambrano so they can rely on their fastballs!!!

I like reading the Italians lineup because all of their last names end in a vowel. :D:

Dude, you forgot to throw a chart in there. Something about falling K rates for Freddy and thus in 2009 he'll have -64 strikeouts.

Though he should have leaned into one in the bottom of the ninth. The pitcher throws two pitches right by his ribcage with the bases loaded and he jumps out of the way. Would have won the game.

Though honestly I can't blame a guy for self preservation. It's probably instinctual to jump out of the way but man.

Swing still looks really long, just like I remember him back with the Padres.

Just watched the Cuba-Panama scrum. Whatta' game. Canada upset US. This is like a dream. Since I was a little kid I've wanted to see the US and all the baseball wielding nations. My dad would be beside himself were he here.

One other thing, Jason V caught Buerhle in the 05 all star game. The blosox then bombed MB. He gets to watch lots of guys pitch to him in the WBC. He's a great baseball player.

Sorry for the delay, was out of town.

3/12/06

Alex Cintron (vs DR) - 1 for 4 with a RBI

Vazquez (vs DR) - 5 IP, 3 hits, 1 run (earned - HR), 0 walks, 5 strikeouts. 71 pitches, of which 44 were strikes. A gem, especially against that offense.

3/13/06

Alex Cintron (vs VEN) - 1 for 4

3/14/06

Freddy (vs DR) - 4 IP, 4 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 walk, 4 strikeouts. 65 pitches, 45 of which were strikes. (The ideal situation, Freddy pitches well against an offensive powerhouse, Ven loses, so Freddy's coming home!)
