After I saw this picture, I got a bit worried about Garcia. He has always seemed kind of mercurial - like he's never quite into it mentally unless it's a 'big game.' So now I'm wondering - has he regressed and is he complacent?

Does this kind of weight gain affect delivery? stamina? Injury potential? People with more pitching knowledge than me, please elaborate.

He looks a lot... beefier... than last season.

at least with this one, the difference is in the chin. i'll keep looking. his gut looks huge in that form fitting black jersey... (no slimming stripes  )

Just compare him to Big Bobby...if he's small to Bobby's standards, then he's alright. :D:

BTW, I agree, I don't think he looks any bigger. He's always been pretty big, he's a big guy. Maybe it's the mini-mullet.

A lot of guys seem to be coming in with the long hair, AJ, Freddy, Crede still has it.

Yeah, I'm kind of worried about Big Bobby, too. I remember hearing talk on the tv news that he was looking like he had gained in the offseason.

If the only thing we have to worry about with Bobby is his weight, I have a feeling we will be alright.

The camera adds 10 pounds, right?

Wow, he definitely looks like he gained weight this past offseason. It's one thing for a pitcher to be fat, like a David Wells. But it's another thing for a pitcher to become fat...in one offseason. Wells, for instance, is used to it--he knows how to deal with the extra baggage and get the job done. Garcia has always been a "big guy," but I don't ever recall him looking this heavy. :o:

He's in a wierd position in that picture. I don't think he looks heavy - 10 pounds tops?? Doesn't seem like anything to worry about.

Don't be concerned about any additional girth. Since he lost his Escalade and mucho cash and jewelry to some Miami bandits, he'll be able to walk off any extra weight.

the photo does him no justice, if you watch him pitch, his shirt always
comes out of the back of his pants. what looks like back fat is actually
just baggy shirt. believe me I suffer thew same fate in many photos.

that said, back when he was with Seattle and heavier
my nickname for him was 'Fat Freddy' as in
Fat Freddy of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers

I agree, I think the picture, because of his jersey hanging out,
makes him look heavier.

Garcia always wears his uniform loose and, um, "sloblike". It's not as bad as rodeo clown Sabathia, but Freddy could still tidy up his appearance a bit.

Yeah, between the uniform and the profuse sweating, he's not a pretty sight to behold...but so long as he pitches well, I really don't care.

Freddy was like that last year. Always sweating his rear off while pitching. He will be fine.

I'll become worried when he surpasses Rich "El Guapo" Garces. Until then, I'm not concerned.

I'm glad to hear he pitched OK. But man, that does NOT look like baggy jersey in back. That looks like Grade A Venezuelan Back-Bacon.

Just FYI, in the farce otherwise known as the WBC Garcia pitched 3 innings versus Italy, gave up one hit and struck out seven.
