I was just wondering what everyone calls out lovely ballpark. I personally will always call it Comiskey and will always call it that. I also despise with utmost hatred the term The Cell. What do you guys think? (If this has been done before I apologize.)

I'll say whatever comes to mind first, but I picked U.S. Cellular Field because it didn't have any votes yet.

I hated when I heard it called "The Cell". I always called it "Comiskey". But somehow over the years of hearing The Cell everywhere...now I use that term.

I guess I am weak of mind to allow that brain washing

Not officially...

It was known as White Sox Park in the 60s and early 70s but I believe it was always called Comiskey Park.

I jump between things, often depending on who I am talking to. I would say in descending order of usage:

Sox Park
The Cell
Comiskey
US Cellular
Comiskular

I've always called it Reinsdorf Field, and not in a flattering way, either. More because of the way it was brought about. But it has transformed into a nice place to call home. I guess a World Champion lightens you up as you get older, and hopefully wiser!!

Of course, my kids'll keep telling me: "It's not Comiskey Park, it's U.S. Cellular Field (or whatever it'll be called then." Curse the corporate naming rights!

I remember reading a Sports Illustrated article on the resurgence of the SOX (article dated 1979!) and it was about how all the fans in the "working class neighborhood" called the park just that-Kaminskey Park. Ive never heard anyone call it that ..........

It's easy for me to call it "The Cell" because it's not Comiskey. Even when they called it "Comiskey" for a while, I called it "The Deuce." There will only be one Comiskey Park. I don't like when people use "Comiskey" as a generic term for where the Sox play. Comiskey Park is gone. It's a parking lot now.

I call it "The Cell". As much as I hate naming rights....that deal is the reason the ballpark looks 1000% better than it did a few years ago. It's been 89 years since Comiskey did anything positive for the White Sox...the Old Roman has his statue...."Comiskey" will always be the old park to me.

I have great memories of the old ballpark. I was glad they honored her by naming the new ballpark New Comiskey back in 1991, but with 20/20 hindsight I realize now that was a mistake. I'm glad the new ballpark has a new name. That leaves "Comiskey Park" for the original and the best.

My complaints with New Comiskey mostly fall into the category of missed opportunities. I'm not going into it here, but suffice to say the renovations done to the ballpark the last six years have corrected nearly everything that could be done short of blowing the whole thing up and starting over again. The ballpark today barely resembles the one that opened in 1991 and it is all for the better.

Having said all that, I can't stand the new ballpark's corporate name. I seriously doubt U.S. Cellular will still be in business five years from now and that means another new name is coming. For me "The Cell" colloquialism doesn't show proper respect for the ballpark or the team. To my ear it sounds like something a Cubs fan might say.

I use the term Sox Park. It's short, descriptive and historically accurate, too. The original ballpark was christened "White Sox Park" back in 1910 and it was only the shortening of its unofficial name, "Comiskey's Baseball Palace of the World" that became the Comiskey Park everyone remembers.

Regardless of who gobbles up U.S. Cellular, "Sox Park" will never change. That's one more reason to start using the term now.

I was mad when the Comiskey name disappeared. I still call it Comiskey at time, but that one was across the street. I'm used to the Cell now.

Wasn't there a proposal after the US Cellular naming first to perhaps call it,
US Cellular Field at Comiskey Park? I would still like to see that happen.:?:

Soxfanspcu11
03-04-2006, 02:17 PM
I still and will probably always call it Comiskey. I don't have a problem with people calling it the cell or whatever else, but the way I look at it, and something that other posters have mentioned, if and when US Cellular's naming rights are terminated, then a new sponsor is going to come in and they will change the name again.

I don't want to keep calling it different names every 15 years, it just seems tacky to me and all of these "corporate" names these days seem to be taking something away from the old-school tradition of baseball.

It's become so commercialized, that I'm waiting for pro ball players uniforms to start looking like Nascar uniforms! That would suck!

Anyway, I do appreciate what US Cellular has done to the park, it looks really nice. And as long as it's the home of the WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS, I could care less what people call it!

Since I still call it Comiskey Park,I voted for it,,,but I still think CELL BLOCK 35 is pretty funny as well! Even some Sox employees laughed at that one.

I CAN still call it what I want since I dont work for the Sox flagship(where they are REQUIRED to call it the 'Cellphone Company' name).
