TAMPA, Fla. -- George Steinbrenner is predicting the New York Yankees' five-year World Series drought will end this October.

"We're going to win it this year," the Yankees owner said Wednesday. "We're going after it."

How is that statement different than any other statement he makes this time of year on an annual basis?

Can't wait to see Pavano try to keep his ERA below 6.00 this year....if he ever gets of the DL.

Blah, blah, blah...

29 teams are trying to win the World Series Championship. Only 1 is trying to defend the World Series Championship.

Which is why I will be rooting EXTRA HARD for the SOX when we play them,
and I hope the Yankees playoff path takes them thru Chicago and we pummell and elminate them. CMON, YANKEES VS SOX IN ALCS

George will be lucky if his team wins the AL East, yet alone anything else. Besides our Sox, I think the AL team to beat is LAA of A.

The Yankees will implode yet again this season, giving George a panic attack of massive proportions, after Vazquez clinches the division series against King George's team.

Isn't that the cue for Ron Gardenhire to start whining about getting no respect? Oh sorry, wrong division....

That would be awesome. We've already dispatched Boston and Anaheim to the ashheap of history, I'd love to see Oakland and New York get the same treatment this fall.

But guys, they do have the biggest payroll!!! That means they have the most talent, right?!

Seriously though, the Sox are the team to beat. With the way they dominated in the post season and their off season moves, there's no way any team can assert otherwise. Steinbrenner is just playing the roll of the Yankees. Losing that attitude for them would be worse than losing the World Series.

How could he possibly believe this? Does he have a starting pitcher under the age of 30 (Wang aside)? For that matter, other than Robinson Cano and Bubba Crosby, does he have a starting position player under the age of 30 set to make the Opening Day roster? Hey Steinbrenner, the only World Series your team has a chance of winning is the Geriatric World Series!

He has to say this - only way to pacify the brain trust that is the Yankee fan base when they call for Torre's head this offseason when they barely make the wildcard. I'm with Hangar...get them here for the ALCS and we'll destroy them.

Um, what's he susposed to say, sorry we're not good enough??? The goal of every time is to win the Series. Yankee fans demand nothing less than a Series win. I really see nothing wrong with this. That said, I would love to beat the Spank-Mees in the playoffs... I wanted them last year, eventhough the Angels were the better team.

A bold statement; way to throw caution to the wind. Completely out of character for him.

Is he talking a WS ring, or his YES network? Can I have what he's smoking?

Aaron Small & Shawn Chacon, but really are these guys going to deliver the whole season?

I'd be surprised if the Yanks win their division. Their pitching sucks, although their bullpen should be better this year.

Per the Yankees roster, (http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=nyy) Small is 34; Chacon just turned 28 in December.

Your point is valid and I agree with you in that I'd be surprised if they win the East. Toronto has strengthened their team considerably and they very well may give the Yankees & Red Sox some great competition all season.

"Quite simply, The Boss just seems happier. He can still get riled up - he doesn't like the World Baseball Classic and he reiterated his displeasure with it yesterday - but he hasn't been nearly as curt as in previous springs and seems to enjoy just hanging around the clubhouse." -- Sam Borden, New York Daily News, 02.23.06 (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/393824p-333932c.html)

and a boston.com writer says

http://www.boston.com/sports/nesn/wilbur/sports_blog/blog/2006/02/23/by_george_a_pledge/index.html
Instead, here is what Steinbrenner will get for $200 million: a likely AL East division winner that as currently constituted is vastly inferior to the Chicago White Sox, a team brimming with -- what do you know -- great pitching. If you can't guarantee what you're going to get out of guys like Wang, Chacon, Pavano, Small, Wright, Johnson, and Mussina, you can't possibly go around believing a world title is in your definitive future.

The Yankees won't even finish ahead of Boston or Toronto. My AL East Predictions:

Boston ----| Will be
Toronto ----| VERY close!
New York
Baltimore
Tampa

He's right. And Bode Miller is going to sweep the gold medals in Turin. Just ask Visa Card.

Tampa

He needs to focus on trying to win a few more games against this bottom dweller first, because the D-Rays have owned their asses the last few seasons.

Yep! And, Tampa played a load of games last year without Rocco Baldailli, who should be back and ready to play!

Red meat for their piranha like fans is what this is. The guy behind the curtain is challenging his aging team. If they get off to a slow start, he'll be bloviating about how much money everyone makes. When's Reinsy gonna guarentee the repeat?
