Nice to get respect, huh? By the way the AL deservedly dominates the rankings. Sorry can't do a link, I gotta run to class.

I like how they mention that bringing Frank and Esteban Loaiza on board make the A's the second-best team in the sport. I seem to recall a certain other team that had both those players and didn't get much in the way of press, hype, or respect...gosh, what was that team?

Whatever. Go Sox.

Who cares what ESPN thinks about the Sox good or bad. They are a non entity.

I agree - didn't hurt us when we were ranked in the teens last year and it isn't going to help us being rated #1 this year.

I am surprised they rank any team above 10 east of Ohio. They have and always will be a Boston/Yankees biased network.

Pssh they didn't even show any coverage of the White House visit, but had no problem showing the Longhorns going the next day

Viva la revolucion!

Yes, the A's at 2 is a little silly to me. I would call them a division contender, but a "title contender"? :\

A pretty biased list, . . . oh, it is at ESPN. Never mind.

I posted a thread on it. Great read if you are a White Sox fan & a bit of a diss if you care at all for the cubs.

With respect to former Sox & our bitter rival the Twins:
Lohse $3.95 mil arbit award. I wonder if the Twins will have to re-shuffle to pay for it?
Kip Wells $4.15 mil for an 8-18 record.
Jeff Weaver (former Sox draft pick or something like that) signed a 1 yr deal between $8.4 & $9 mil with the Angels. Puts Garland's contract in perspective.

I hate espn too, but to be fair, ESPN did show coverage of the Sox White House visit on the 5PM Sports center

That's good to hear, I was watching on ESPNEWS, as I keep that on in the background when I do my homework and didn't see them show it, but saw the Longhorns get shown the next day, so I was going off of that

Even on the east coast the White
Sox can be
Picked to be
Number 1!

In all honesty, it gives me more drive when goofs like Jeff Brantley shoot their mouths off with anti-White Sox rhetoric. I'd rather not have east coast media jump on our bandwagon. They should be picking the Mets/Yanks for the World Series instead, then we can claim we beat the 'experts' again!!

My favorite is the comment on how great Johnny Damon's OF defense was - if I remeber right, he was a pitter-pattering butcher out there. He definitely blew one in the ALDS.

At risk of being called Flubsessed, I'm still gonna throw this one out there...

Cubs: Best offseason news: A $13.5 million bleacher expansion project will add about 1,800 seats to Wrigley Field. Means even more folks calling in sick on Fridays.

Don't you need a job to call in sick? :redneck

But seriously folks, I think the Red Sox may have a falling out this year. I like how they gave some respect to the BrewCrew. Also, I think Baltimore could be pretty decent this year, depending on what Mazzone can do with the pitching staff.

As for the SOX BEING #1!!!! ...I hope these guys can play as well with a target on their back as they did with a chip on their shoulder. Pitchers and catchers report...tomorrow!! WOO HOO :gulp: :bandance:

1. Johnny Damon, Yankees
2. Derek Jeter, Yankees

3. Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners
4. Rafael Furcal, Dodgers
5. Chone Figgins, Angels
6. Jimmy Rollins, Phillies
7. Scott Podsednik, White Sox
8. Juan Pierre, Cubs
9. Grady Sizemore, Indians
10. Brian Roberts, Orioles
11. Brady Clark, Brewers
12. David Eckstein, Cardinals

If they were to keep track of runs after steals I think Pods would be at the top of the list.

The validity of these rankings can be found in the comments for Boston. They lost Damon, an absolute butcher in CF and replaced him with Crisp, who from what I've seen is a pretty good defender, and they talk about a drop in outfield defense? Ridiculous.

Sox are #1 in my mind regardless of what ESPN spews out of their rears...

Interesting the A's got Thomas who couldn't find a spot on the Sox bench and former Sox castoff Loaiza and you're a title contender. Hmmm...wonder if the Flubs will try and convince Pope Donn Paul and One Dog to come out of retirement.

If they were to keep track of runs after steals I think Pods would be at the top of the list.

I think the top four would be the same in most lists, although it will obviously change with Damon/Jeter in the same line-up. I think a case can be made to put Pods above Figgens and Rollins.

The Dallas Morning News had the White Sox ranked No. 1 almost all of last season. After the AL won the All Star Game, it said the Sox had won home field advantage in the World Series.

The Sox got their share of respect last year.

It isn't surprising or unreasonable at all. The A's were pretty good before this; like us, they have an outstanding pitching staff. The main issue with Thomas is whether he will stay healthy. If he does, this helps the A's a lot. (That probably would have been true for us before the Thome acquisition.) I guess that I haven't followed Loaiza very much since he left. Has he rebounded?

How many steals did Damon & Jeter have last year & how many runs were generated from that? Isn't that the true value of a lead off guy?

I'm not sold on Oakland either.

I can't say that anymore. I don't know how many years I've said they're nohinh to be afraid of and then they beat the hell out of the Sox and get into the playoffs. Either way.....I still hate Bill Bean!

Oh joy of joys. We should have the #1 ranking....and the Sox will keep that ranking...until they lose two games in a row at some point, which would cause a drop down to 13th or 14th.

I'm usually not a total stat hound, but watching these three guys quite a bit last year, playoffs not withstanding for Rollins and Figgins (who was mostly MIA), I would find it hard to put Pods over either of them, especially Rollins, who made much better contact than both of these guys last year and has consistently displayed more offensive tools, especially with 61 EXH and 41 SB's and a 36-game hitting streak?

Player R H 2B 3B HR BI BB SO BA OBP SLG SB CS GIDP
Rollins 115 196 38 11 12 54 47 71 .290 .338 .431 41 6 9
Figgins 113 186 25 10 8 57 64 101 .290 .352 .397 62 17 9
Podsednik 80 147 28 1 0 25 47 75 .290 .351 .349 59 23 7

That list is actually quite accurate

Aren't you leaving out AB's?
Rollins PHI 677AB 247On-Base 487 Outs
Figgins LAA 642AB 250On-Base 473 Outs
Pods CWS 507AB 197On-Base 383 Outs

If you give Pods the same # of ab's he's ahead of these guys as far as getting on-base goes.

He's a few points ahead of Rollins in OBP, but Rollins can do a lot more with the bat. Additionally, his KO % is way lower than the both of them, even with 170+ more AB's than Pods, he whiffed fewer times.

I'm not saying Pods is not of value, but as far as the rankings are concerned, Rollins brings more to the table and deserves to be ranked where he is.

SoLongFrank

I don't dispute that Rollins is the real deal. I'm been keeping tabs on his numbers for years now (especially the win share) & he's as much an rbi man as he is a run scorer. But you have to pay for that kind of production. He's on his way to a Renteria like contract & I don't think Pods will ever see that kind of money.

Given his cost & the likelihood of retaining him I'd take Pods.
