TURIN, Italy (AP) - They're out! Baseball and softball won't be played at the 2012 London Olympics. And this time, the call stands.
Baseball and women's softball remain on the program for the 2008 Beijing Games, and will be eligible to reapply for readmission to the 2016 Games.
London, however, is no longer possible

I'm in favor of eliminating alot of Olympic sports. It would be more interesting to me to just have the traditional sports and not alot of the crappy ones that have come on the scene lately

I read this one on the issue. It really doesn't make sense that they would eliminate something without even replacing it and give no reasoning behind their decision. There has to be some kind of weird corruption behind this. At least give a reason, then it would be understandable.

Noooo, there wouldn't any corruption involved with the IOC.

Not having to watch the summer olympics - Priceless.

Hopefully the WBC goes down after 2006.

MLB - Can't beat the real thing

leaves the door open for Bridge to become part of the games :?:

think I'm kidding?

from the OFFICIAL Olympic website
http://www.olympic.org/uk/organisation/if/fi_uk.asp?id_federation=42

Climbing, bridge, golf, roller skating and surfing are sports that are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

Are you already forgetting the women's beach volleyball? For shame.

I'm guesssing most of the people on the committee are european, which would explain why they would want to get rid of baseball.

I would like to see basketball and hockey eliminated as well. I don't believe team sports should be Olympic events. Because these sports are popular with spectators (unlike baseball and softball), I don't see them going away.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they added Texas Holdem as a sport.

you got that right

TORINO, Italy (AP) -- The United States was left without a voice on the Olympics' most influential body Friday when Jim Easton lost his seat on the IOC executive board.
Easton, an outgoing IOC vice president, was defeated 57-36 by South Africa's Sam Ramsamy in the final round of a secret ballot.
Another American, Anita DeFrantz, withdrew earlier as a candidate to give Easton a better chance of retaining a spot on the policy-making body.
Easton himself earlier pulled out of the running for the IOC vice presidency to contest the regular seat on the 15-member board.
The result was another sharp setback for U.S. interests in the European-dominated International Olympic Committee. On Thursday, the IOC rejected bids for reinstatement of two traditional American sports -- baseball and softball -- at the 2012 London Olympics.

I'm soooo bummed that there won't be any softball. :(:I really loved watching the US team and I think it helped spike more interest in the sport. Maybe the US team was too dominating for the olympics..having a perfect record in Athens and only giving up 1 run the whole tournament.

Actually there is/was an effort to make the card game Bridge an Olympic sport. No kidding...

Let's just say it, they got rid of baseball and softball because they are closely identified with America and in the world's eyes: if it's American, it's bad!

Having spoken with Europeans lately, I'm just not surprised by the vitrol in the US-European relationship in any area. The Nobel Prize comittee awarded El Bharadei the Nobel peace Prize primarily to spit in the ye of the US which opposed him. Now it turns out El Bharadei has turned a blind eye to Iran developing the bomb and the Europeans are running for our nuclear umbrella.

They'll be shocked when we pull out of their Olympics completely and with how well the WBC goes.
