IMHO, the one area the Sox still need to give attention to this offseason is veteran left handed relievers. So why not Wilson Alvarez

Before last year, when he had a shoulder injury, Wilson was eating up monster innings, and still had a very good strikeouts to walks ration, and was giving up less than a hit an inning.

I don't know what the status of his shoulder is, but assuming its not toast, why not at least invite Alvarez to spring training.

Uh, no. Alvarez has not thrown more than 175 innings since 1997. He has thrown more than 100 only once since 1999 (121.2 in 2004). Last year he only threw 24 innings. He'll also be 36 in March. So, no way.

He also retired before last season ended. Unlike Clemens, I do not see anyone coaxing him out of retirement.

He's been a reliever making the occasional spot start all those years. He's not supposed to go out and pitch 100+ innings...

But anyway, he retired due to age and nagging arm injuries. We don;t have to worry about him coming back.

Didn't know that he had retired. That would explain thre falloff in innings last year.

Regardless of Wilson's status, LH relief looks to be a need for our boys, and the pickings are rather slim in the free agent market right now.

As much as I liked Wilson when he was with the Sox back in the day, I don't know how I feel about him coming back now. I think we should explore another way first.

OP talked about him eating up monster innings. I was just showing that was not the case.
