Theo Epstein rejoins Red Sox

BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that Theo Epstein will rejoin the organization.

Principal Owner John Henry, Chairman Tom Werner, President/CEO Larry Lucchino and Epstein issued the following joint statement:
"As you know, we have spoken frequently during the last 10 weeks. We have engaged in healthy, spirited debates about what it will take over the long-term for the Red Sox to remain a great organization and, in fact, become a more effective organization in philosophy, approaches and ideals. Ironically, Theo's departure has brought us closer together in many respects, and, thanks to these conversations, we now enjoy the bonds of a shared vision for the organization's future that did not exist on October 31. With this vision in place, Theo will return to the Red Sox in a full-time baseball operations capacity, details of which will be announced next week." The Red Sox and Theo Epstein will have no further comment until next week.

So lame. If Epstein had a pair, he'd have taken a GM position somewhere else. I guess he prefers to be nurtured under the watchful eyes of Red Sox ownership. Now he just looks like a pouting baby who came back to his old team with his tail between his legs.

It would appear Lucchino has lost the power struggle, that is the only possible explaination for this absurd situation.

Hey Fenway, signing Willie Harris to a minor league contract with a NRI, is a pretty decent signing... is the beef with "Red Sox Nation" about Willie himself or is it with the off-season as a whole??

Added Beckett to the rotation, replaced Mueller with Lowell, added Tavares, Seanez and Mota to the pen (with Paplbon and Foulke, that looks pretty decent), Arroyo, Graffanino and Timlin re-signed, added Loretta at 2B, replaced Kevin Millar with JT Snow, dumped the sensitive Renteria and nabbed Andy Marte..

That's not toooo bad of an off-season considering you guys had no REAL GM. Man, it could be a lot worse.

Huge risk on Lowell, and big salary too. And they still don't have an SS or CF unless you're a big Alex Cora fan, and if I'm not mistaken - isn't the BoSox FO BP-philes? Which is interesting since BP rated Alex Cora one of the 5 least valuable SSs in 2005. They still have ?s at closer (but strong middle relief), and while they have depth, there are ?s across the board on their pitchers including Schilling, Clement, Beckett.

Right now - they're at best even with the BlueJays for 2d, and quite possibly 3d. They may be well positioned for '07, but not '06.

You can sense by listening to WEEI, reading the boards and papers that fans don't expect much in 2006. Seems hard to believe that 15 months after winning it all a good chunk of that team is gone.

A lot of question marks
Can Schilling bounce back?
Can Foulke regain his 2004 form?
Questions about Wells, who playing CF and SS, who will bat leadoff.

The way I look at 2006 is the only way a team from the East makes it into October is winning the division because if Toronto is stronger it will be tough to pile on wins in the division games. Can Boston win the division? Yes, but they could also finish third the way it looks on paper right now.

WEEI and Ricky Smith Pontiac still looking for the truck Foulke was suppose to give back after the season

These events have made his weekly radio stint sad and seemingly interminable. With Foulke in a funk, you would think that WEEI would stop the madness and kill the segment, but there is a problem, and it has to do with money. Foulke signed on for the weekly gig because he worked out a deal with WEEI and one of their sponsors, Ricky Smith Pontiac/GMC.
In exchange for his comments, Foulke got a new truck from Ricky Smith. He is obligated to appear because of this deal. Such is the negative result of the checkbook journalism that WEEI and other stations practice on an all-too-regular basis.

Embarrassing. The people in baseball operations were working hard as usual late Thursday night, trying to plug the team's holes in center field and shortstop, when Epstein called them and told them there was going to be an announcement that he's coming back next week. No one knew quite what to say to their former boss. There's been no discussion about who will report to whom. No one knows how this is going to work, and Theo has burned some bridges with his own people. But John W. Henry loves him. So he gets to come back. The only certainty is that Theo will report to CEO Larry Lucchino, according to Henry.

Epstein returns to help Red Sox
One of the final things Theo Epstein did as his tenure as Red Sox GM was ending 2-1/2 months ago was to leave Fenway in a gorilla suit to avoid reporters. Perhaps that was a harbinger of the odd offseason the Sox have endured just one year after winning the World Series.

Such a public relations strategy would represent a dramatic departure from the ownership's media-friendly style. This is, after all, an organization that held a press conference in December to explain the non-signing of free agent outfielder Johnny Damon.

It was heartening to see that they still can't get their story straight.

Try this laugher from ''principal owner" John Henry on the subject of the front office discord that led to Theo's departure: ''The media has been in much more turmoil over the Red Sox than has been the case internally." We could consider taking his word for that if he hadn't already said a few paragraphs earlier, ''This is not the same organization that Theo left. There was enough discord then to give Theo legitimate reasons to move on."
