Minaya looks to be taking a low-cost/low-risk chance on Boone here.

A minor league contract...not a bad idea if he can give something to you. This seems like the first acquisition for the Mets that didn't require them to open the checkbook and have Brinks make a delivery.

As a Mets fan (my second favorite team), I love it. Matsui has been a bust and worse case scenario Boone costs a few hundred thousand or he makes the team and stinks (and is subsequently released in May or June).

Didn't Bret play horrible with his stint with the Twinkies last year? I remember when he had that unbelievable year with the Mariners but that could have been steroid aided (according to Canseco)

I would say that it is very likely he juiced. Boone seemed to "blossom" in the late 90s and then had that monster 2001 year where he hit 37HRs and 140+ RBI. He seemed to "wither" shortly after steroid testing got tougher recently and only banged out 7HRs and 37RBI.
