Great article about Widger...my favorite part:

Describe a White Sox fan: "The auto worker, the guy from the steel mill. Blue-collar people who work hard for their money and expect players to work as hard as they do."

A Cubs fan? "They just want a hot dog and a beer."

I haven't been to Indiana lately to check out where the mills used to be, but I'm pretty sure Ford still has a plant in what used to be East Chicago Heights (I think they changed the name of the town). Chrysler also has a plant in Belvidere, which even though it's in Boone Co. is almost a suburb nowadays.

"The way we won, the group of people, it was like a family," Widger said of his year with Chicago. "You've heard it a million times, but the White Sox are very family oriented. There's no bickering, no backstabbing in the locker room that just about every team has at some point.

Kind of makes me proud to be a fan.

Theres still a bunch of Steel Mills in NW Indiana. Including minor league Gary Railcats "Steelyard" sponsored by US Steel. NW Indiana is a huge part of the Sox fanbase, I wish they'd get some more respect (no trophy appearance).

There is also a Ford assembly plant on Chicago's south east side -- Hegwisch area, I believe.

Widger is just the kind of guy that we want on this team. He seems like a good guy, very team-oriented, and he knows his role and does all he can to excell in it.

I remember for a while last season he was just raking, hitting about .320. Even though he fell off a bit after that, a backup catcher hitting .240 isn't bad at all, and the pitchers didn't miss a beat when he was in there.

I'm totally offended by this quote. I'm a total white collar desk jockey.. and I like hotdogs and beer, too...

I just want a hot dog and a beer. But replace hot dog with chateau brion and beer with imported beer. :gulp:

Widger taking a poke at Flubbie fans, I luv it!

Not trying/wanting to hijack the thread, but Widger saying that reminds me of a quote/paraphrase I heard earlier this season [but can't remember the source]... basically, if a player was seen in the clubhouse reading the Tribune, other players would ask sarcastically, "hey, how the Cubs doing?"...
