View Full Version : How did you first find WSI?

A buddy of mine emailed all our Sox and Cub friends a bunch of posts from the original "You Write Tomorrow's Cubune Headline" thread and I thought it was hilarious. So naturally I came here to see what this site was all about and found a great place to lurk and/or talk Sox baseball.

Even better was when I found the WSI Chat in early August. Nothing adds to the natural drama of baseball than being in a chat room with a bunch of different people, dark clouds, and regular fans predicting what is going to happen next and what Ozzie should do. How did you come to be here at WSI?

I believe I found this site through Yahoo. It was a 3 or 4 years ago. I was just looking for White Sox sites besides WhiteSox.com and I found this and another site called Sox Addict which did not appear to be too active and I think is long gone now. I used to come here and read the columns on the front page for a long time before I really started checking out the message board.

Desperately searching the internet for a message board so I could contact fans in Denver to watch the play-offs with. Been coming back ever since.

BTW - glad this thread was started, I had no idea there was a chat room on here! :D:

After having a fight with a whole bunch of posters on ESPN message boards about how they thought Pookey Reese was a better player than Ray Durham; A Wise poster on there named Davers referred me to this sight. Who knew after all the arguments he and I had on there that he'd actually point me here.

For many years I lived a lonely existence as a Sox fan far away in another country. Then Al Gore created the Internet. Then George Bova created WSI. Then one day I did a google search and found this place. It was less a less sordid way of meeting like-minded people than the dating sites. My life is complete now.

I was trolling for info and pictures of Old Comiskey some years ago and found the "Memories of Old Comiskey Park" pages on the site. Found the message boards some time later and lurked for nearly a year before registering.

The rest, as they say, is history. This site is head and shoulders above other common-interest boards, and for that we owe a tip o' the cap to the mods, whose diligence and good humor make it work.

Very similar, about 3-4 years ago I was in a corporate training course downtown which was boring as hell; but we did have an internet connection. Thus, I decided to search for White Sox news since it was during the winter and I'm sure hot stove news was on my brain and came across WhiteSoxInterace.com and has been a daily staple to at least paruse the threads ever since.

I think I found it from a cubs suck web site someone told me about back in the day.

I was deployed to Iraq and missed the entire 2004 season (I watched about 4 ESPN televised games on Armed Forces Network). When I got back I was a bit out of touch with the goings on of the team and did a Google search to find any and all information before opening day. I love when you can pinpoint the beginning of an addiction down to a single moment in time.

i was listening to a game on the radio early in the '04 season when rooney started fawning about this "totally biased" SOX website, and were laughing about some comments and how hard-core the members were. i checked it out later when i was searching for info on the team and haven't turned back since. i dont post much, but reading the articles and the posts are enough to keep me informed and entertained throughout the workday.

I've been a member of the M's board since 2000 back when it was not controled by MLB. I follow Scotty to what ever team he ends up on and got tired of all of the trolling that goes on on the MLB boards. The past two years I had found an independant Brewers site that I really enjoyed. Then when Scotty became a Sox I had to resort to the MLB site until someone mentioned this site. I've been here since then :D: , even after I was thought to be a troll. :o:

I've found this to be a very nice place to talk baseball, even non-Sox baseball and spend more time here than I do on the M's site.

I originally came across WSI in 2003 when the deal was announced with US Cellular. I was trying to find more details on the proposed renovations of the ballpark, and my friend (who isn't a member) sent me a link to the site.

I immediately bookmarked WSI and came here for breaking news and rumors re trades & acquisitions. Finally, last May I decided to register and start contributing.

My brother's bro-in-law mentioned it to me years ago, he used to always send me these knee deep comments which sounded like conversations we had, and since we are both cub haters too it was good to go to a 100% pro-Sox site.

But once Paulie re-signed and it became obvious Big Frank was gone, I felt it was time to let my feelings known to true Sox fans, as I know most of them felt the same way I did. It was then I made my first posting.

My memory doesn't always serve me well, but I'm pretty sure I signed up in 1999, when this site was in it's early stages. I found it through a web search on metacrawler - a nice site before google took off. That was before rivals, etc. I remember vividly hanging on this site through the 2000 season and the division title. I was under another name, which was being confused with someone else, so I changed it in 2002.

Those "rivals" days weren't that good. The format was boilerplate for all teams, so nothing unique. I know it was done to get some more server space, but I'm happy they were able to do this, and retain WSI's unique "feeling".

After MLB took over all teams' websites (taking away their individuality in the process  ), someone posted a link to this site on the message board at chisox.com. I came over immediately, as I did not wanna have to deal with those cookie-cutter boards. I like that WSI is not part of a message board "ring," plus the baseball talk over here is MUCH more intelligent.

I found the site in march after I had recently joined a Bears board to talk about the upcoming NFL draft. I thought that if there was a board to talk about Da Bears then there had to be a board to talk about the White Sox. I was motivated to find a Sox site after getting crap from the globs of Flub fans in my relative area. I wanted to talk intelligent baseball with other Sox fans, instead of arguing with delusional Flub fans. There are very few Sox fans that I know personally, but a lot of people I know root for the sCrUBS

I went to WSI a bunch of times when I wanted to read the stories on Old Comiskey, Sox history, and look at the great pictures. I thought it was the best-looking team site on the 'net, and chock full of things I could actually remember. Great to refresh my memory esp. with regard to old players and seasons. It was great because so many of my friends are not from the south side and don't remember the old teams. I remember finding that page on Falstaff - the beer of champions, and I knew it was the real deal!

It took a while before I realized they had a message board. I joined when we were all fuming about the collapse of the 2003 season - I needed to commiserate.

You've seen me at the last few SoxFests? Chances are, I've seen you, but just didn't know it. I know I've seen Hal before- usually at the WCSF table downstairs. My hair color makes me stand out, huh? I've heard that before....

I see that guy with the silver hair EVERYWHERE!!!!! Word on the street is that he's some kind of collector, but he always manages to get himself in front of me in line, no matter what line I'm in!

My picture is in a couple of the core of the core photos in the gallery. I'll say something if/when I see you this year.

I don't know if the guy is a collector or not because I usually don't see him with a backpack full of stuff. I hate the people that take up 10 square feet while in line because they have to go through their stuff to figure out what they want to get signed. You just know they're getting this stuff signed and then selling it...

I cannot believe this thread. I was just thinking a few minutes ago why no one has ever started a thread about finding WSI. At least one that I ever saw. Then I check back in and almost dropped when I saw this.

I was at Soxfest and WSI had a booth. I stopped and talked to a fellow(I think it was George) and a young man behind the table and they were going back and forth about the Royce Clayton or Jose V. debate. Who should be playing? They asked for my vote. Of course, I voted for The Stashe!
When I was talking to George(I think) he had asked if I had been to the site and I had indeed already been on but never to the message boards. He was surprised. I use to just go and read the articles and participate in the polls on the front page.
Well, 20,000 hits later, here I am. :gulp:

You had a cold... I had a sinus & upper respiratory infection! But... I was not about to let that stop me from having a good time! Good to know the Hyatt's chicken soup is good, though!

Well, after sitting in the booth most of the day and hearing my voice fade to almost nothing, I thought discretion was the better part of valor.

As for the chicken soup you get from room service, you get both a matzoh ball and a kreplach.

I remember seeing you at the last 2 or 3 Soxfests. I think it's your hair color that really makes you stand out. I also remember you at the bar last year and wondering if you were a member or not.

It's kind of funny when you've been to a few Soxfests in a row you start to see the same people ever year. I'm betting that taller guy with the silver hair will be there again this year. Ever see him?

There's also one other guy I see all the time that seems to always be wearing a Sox home jersey tucked into a pair of blue jeans. He's usually with a girl that I can't tell if it's his daughter, girlfriend or wife.

Most importantly, does M & M Guy go to Soxfest?

Why would a part owner of the White Sox have to stand in line?

Cause his close confidant Frank Thomas didnt have pull bein on the bench

I always envisioned a picture of him with his arm around Frank, but with a blue dot over his face to protect his identity, it would just fit his personality so well, and if ever talked, his voice would be dubbed by ricardo montelbon

I was on Whitesox.com message boards and someone posted a messsage to the effect "check out this great Sox site." I checked it out and joined. Mostly I read the posts from other fans so I can keep tabs on what Sox fans are thinking. I have found the game threads are sometimes more up-to-the-minute than gameday on Sox.com. Even when gameday doesn't hang up, I usually check out the game thread for commentary.

I had my full of the Moronotti and Woody Paige types of the "journalism" world constantly ripping the Sox so I began to search the net for Sox "fan sites" where I could vent my anger about these types and I ran into WSI.

As you can tell, I joined this site right about the time the Sox went into their August slump, and thank god I found it. It was great to finally be around Sox fans and be at a place where I could finally find fans who were as dedicated and obsessed as I was.

My only regret is that I did not find it earlier. The fact that my "join" date of "August 2005" is displayed every time I post slightly upsets me because it makes me feel that some people may believe that I am a fair-weather or bandwagon type of fan, who only joined when the Sox were winning. But the truth is, I am 22 years old, been a Sox fan since 1990, and attended my first game in September 1991. Once I saw my first "live" game, I was hooked.

In 1994, my parents bought space on the scoreboard for my birthday and although it sounds silly, that cemented, without a doubt my allegiance to the southside. I was 11 years old at the time and it made my day, and I just knew at that time I would be a Sox fan forever.

I just wish I had known about this place during the Cubs magnificent run of '03, the taunts I had to endure during that time were brutal. Of course, when the inevitable collapse occurred, I had all the ammunition I needed.

But this site is seriously great, I don't go online that much, but after I check my email, I come here right away. Props to everyone who makes this site a reality! Thank you!
