I'm sure many of you are familiar with baseballreference.com and the way they have stats for every player. One of the interesting things they do is compare players by similar batting numbers. With all this talk of Miguel Tejada possibly coming to the Sox I looked him up real quick and found these are the two guys Tejada is most similar to:

Jose Valentin (http://www.baseballreference.com/v/valenjo03.shtml) (864)
Nomar Garciaparra (http://www.baseballreference.com/g/garcino01.shtml) (863)Maybe he is better off with the Red Sox (I know this is just a crazy stat comparison, I just thought it was interesting)...

I do believe that stats are helpfull in revealing strengths/weaknesses that are not readily visible even to an astute observer. However, Valentin has never, at any point in his career, been the same player as Tejada. A young Nomar is a good comparison.

Valentin had decent pop to his bat, and the walk totals are the same. The big difference is batting average. Tejada's carrer average is about 40 points higher. And Tejada doesn't strike out as much. So while there are some similar traits, are there things different about the two players.
