The Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels also reportedly have interest in Tejada, though to this point, none has come close to matching the Orioles' asking price. The Orioles have no interest in trading Tejada within the division to the Red Sox, but it is not impossible, according to a team source, that the club could get Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez in a three- or four-team deal without trading Tejada to Boston.
The Orioles are interested in White Sox right-hander Jon Garland, who is a free agent after this season, and had some talks with Chicago last week in a deal that didn't include Tejada, according to industry sources. However, the White Sox wanted Bedard, instead of pitching prospects in the deal, and the Orioles balked.

That shows how much I know, I would have wanted more than just Bedard for Garland.

So would I, but I think that Baltimore would take Garland for Bedard - i.e. I don't believe that report. My guess is we asked for Bedard plus a prospect.

I've been trying to explain this to everyone for the last few weeks. Yes, Jon is better. But not that much better. Not enough to counteract the severe salary difference, as well as the fact that Jon's in a contract year.

Some people would argue that after last season, Jon's value has never been higher. Those people are wrong. It's obvious now that that isn't the case. Jon has very little value, because of his cost.

Jon Garland in his 5th full season at age 26: 18-10, 1.17WHIP, 3.50ERA, 4.68K/9, 115-47 K-BB in 221IP
Jon Garland in his 2d full season at age 23: 12-12, 1.41WHIP, 4.58ERA, 5.23K/9, 112-83 K-BB in 192IP (Very similar #s in '03 and '04)

Erik Bedard in his 2d full season at age 26: 6-8, 1.38WHIP, 4.00ERA, 7.94K/9, 125-57 K-BB in 141.2IP
Bedard pre-ASB and the knee injury: 5-1, 1.04WHIP, 2.08ERA, 7.71K/9, 52-14K-BB in 60.2IP

Basically, Bedard gives you something between Garland's 2002-2004 and his 2005 performance with better peripheral #s (K/9, K/BB), but in a lefty and relatively cheap for 4 more years. The question on him is whether he can put it together for a full season, but generally you're talking about a guy whose downside is similar to Garland 2002-2004 and whose upside is Garland 2005 with more Ks. But again, is a lot cheaper. It's why IMO Cabrera & Bedard are among the closest things they have to untouchables.

That's why Baltimore isn't going to part with him unless they get some solid prospects in addition to a potential FA. There's a slight chance that they do something if they get a window to resign Jon and pay him $10M per, but even then, straight up is about the best you can hope for.

Except to teams who can realistically win this year. To those teams, he is very much worth that $ cost. And we'll see that play out by July if we still have 6 healthy starting pitchers.

That would make no sense. Getting rid of one starter and adding another. I thought we already had too many starters?

Please. Bedard has yet to prove he can pitch a full season.
What kind of value did you put on Freddie Garcia in June of 2004?
AJ Burnett in July of 2005?
