When the dust settles you can make a case for the DR to win the WBC. A lineup with A-Rod, Manny, Ortiz, Tejada, Soriano, Pujols

Pitching isn't too shabby either

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5275) probably will play for the Dominican Republic in next year's inaugural World Baseball Classic.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2258255

from WFAN A-Rod tells Mike and Mad Dog he is leaning to the Dominican team

Letting guys play for countries that they never even have lived in makes the WBC a sham. A-rod was born in New York. That goes for the Italian team too. Those guys should not be allowed to play for Italy.

parents were born in the DR so he qualifies :?:

All 16 teams will be comprised of players that meet the following qualifications:
The player is a citizen of the nation the team represents, as evidenced by a valid passport the player holds as of Jan. 15, 2006; or
The player is a permanent legal resident of the nation or territory the team represents, as evidenced by documentation satisfactory to World Baseball Classic Inc. and the International Baseball Federation; or
The player was born in the nation or territory the team represents, as evidenced by a birth certificate or its equivalent; or
The player has one parent who is, or if deceased was, a citizen of the nation the team represents, as evidenced by a passport or other documentation satisfactory to World Baseball Classic Inc. and the IBAF; or
The player has one parent who was born in the nation or territory the team represents, as evidenced by a birth certificate or its equivalent. (Additionally, if a player has ancestral ties to a participating country/territory such that, in his and the participating country's/territory's opinion, the player should be declared eligible to play for that country/territory, they may petition World Baseball Classic Inc. for a declaration of his eligibility. Such petition will be granted if World Baseball Classic Inc. and the IBAF jointly determine that the player's participation is justified, and further reasonably can be seen as promoting international baseball. In the event a player is eligible to play on more than one team, the player may select the team for which he wishes to play, provided that nothing shall prohibit such a player from declaring his willingness to play for any team for which he is eligible to play.)

Players competing in the three-week event will use international rules, including the use of a designated hitter, and possibly a "mercy" rule -- when a nine-inning game is shortened to seven innings if the losing team is trailing by 10 or more runs. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there were 60 games (out of 2,430) that would have ended two innings prematurely in the Major Leagues during the 2005 regular season.

IMO, they should be able to play for whatever country they feel the most national heritage for.

A-Rod obviously is fond of his Dominican heritage, so let him play there. They're going to win it anyway, with or without A-Rod.

There are only two things I hate. People who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch.

A-rod is a tool. Not for this, he's just a tool in general.

Totally agree. I was one of the few who WAS actually excited about the WBC. However, as you stated, this aspect has turned the thing into a complete joke.

Tony Graffanino: "Mr. Selig, one time in the 4th grade I looked at a map of Italy."

Selig: "Tony, just name the position you want to play for the Italian team and it's yours."

Moms brothers sisters boyfriend knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw A-Rod pass out at 31 flavors last night. So he qualifies.

What a joke!

P.S. my apologies to Kittle 42 for not using apostrophies.

I'd have more respect for this whole goofy thing if they just came out and said that anybody can play for any team they like. That's really what's happening, so I wish they would just come out and say it.

It is just exhibition baseball, after all. Plus, allowing players to play in the countries of their ancestory makes the playing field more evenly spread out. If not for guys like Piazza, who exactly would play for the Italians that could actually compete with the teams from the U.S., Domican Republic, Puerto Rico, etc.? Everybody just needs to relax and have a little fun with this. It is a pretty cool idea.

Fenway, every so often on Jim Rome's radio show, he will mention Manny being Manny and mention him cutting a throw from Johnny Damon. That sounds hilarious but I don't know the details. If you remember that play, would you describe it here for me?
