In my mind it's Mark Buehrle. Just wondering of course if anyone thought Contreras' postseason performance meritted an opening day start (he pitched as our #1 in October) or if anyone had a case to give Garland (18 wins) or Garcia (two series clinching wins) the ball come April? Your thoughts?

It will be Buehrle and it will continue to be Mark until he is no longer on the team.

What he said.

How about Game 2? Actually for a rotation to start the season, I go Buehrle, Garcia, Contreras, Garland, McCarthy.

That rotation makes me want the season to start tomorrow. Plus all this friggin' snow on the ground.

I think Ozzie will go with a strategy similar to the one he used in the playoffs, meaning you won't see Freddy until the first road game.

Buehrle
Jose
Garland
Freddy
McCarthy

I would say either Buehrle or Garcia. Sort of doubt if he would start Jose Contreras on opening day. Either way Ozzie knows what he is doing.

I hope and think it will be Contreras. He was Ozzie's go to guy for the first man to start every playoff series and the way he pitched down the stretch I have a feeling Ozzie wants him to be the opening day starter.

Buehrle is the leader of the staff. It's his opening day until proven otherwise.

Who are we opening against again?

Did we have anyone who pitched well against them last year?

It'll be Mark on opening day, then probably follow with the guys that have been looking the best/feeling the best in Spring Training.

Our best pitcher at the moment is Contreras so why wouldn't he start on Opening Day after being our first starter in the playoffs? What has happened in the offseason to remove him from the No. 1 spot?

I also agree with Buehrle.

Maybe you should have made this question into a poll.

I agree that Jose was our ace down the stretch and was the most trusted pitcher on the staff in the playoffs. That being said, Mark has proven to be the leader of the pitchers and for that reason deserves the opening night nod. Either way Mark and Jose will get around 34-35 starts, barring something unspeakable happening.

I, like everyone else posting on this site, love Mark Buerhle and how he battles for the Sox. But he's no longer our best pitcher, and he's really not the kind of ACE who can beat anyone elses ACE on a given day.

I think Jose Contreras is now the MAN, as he proved in the second half last year and during the postseason.

If I were KW, I would sign JC to a deal with two more guaranteed years and an option before the season, and if I were Ozzie, I'd start him opening day.

Mark Buerhle is a fantastic #2 guy. After him I'd probably go Garland, Garcia, McCarthy, though you could easily flip the G boys.

Mark is still the workhorse on this group, and I would dare say, its "mentor." Give it to him.

Career with White Sox (as a fulltime starter):
Buehrle: 81-52
(169 starts, 5 seasons, 1172.2 IP)
Contreras: 20-11
(45 starts, 1 1/2 seasons, 281.2 IP)
Garcia: 23-12
(49 starts, 1 1/2 seasons, 331 IP)
Garland:54-46
(130 starts, 4 seasons, 938.1 IP)

Buerhle is clearly the staff leader and the "Ace" whether he can outduel Zito or Santana everytime out.

In 2004 Loaiza was coming off a much better season, and yet Buehrle was the opening day starter. I think this year will be similar.

Buehrle starting on opening day is simply a tradition at this point.

If i remember correctly the reason Contreras was the #1 starter in the playoffs was because the way the rotation worked out... Buerhle pitched on the 1st of October and wouldn't be ready to pitch again on the 4th.. unless they cut his rest short..

I'd go with Contreras. It sends a message that, "You're the ace of this staff. Go win 20 and show everyone how good you really are."

The beauty of a guy like MB is that he doesn't care either way.

Loaiza was originally supposed to get the opening day start in 2004 but conceded it to Buerhle as a way of returning the favor for Buerhle taking a day off at the end of 2003 to give Loaiza a shot at setting the single-season record for wins by a Mexican-born pitcher.
