Who is there SS now. And why did they feel the need to deal Renteria? Does this mean the Flubs get Lugo?

I would guess that the Red Sox will look to trade for Lugo now, although Tampa Bay might be reluctant to trade him within the division. Likely the Red Sox may end up with Alex Cintron at short for 2006.

Fenway, can you tell me what this means for Kevin Youkilis? And can Marte play short?

That would be too funny and would only prove what most of us suspect - that in the rush to get the story off first, reporters sometimes don't listen to the entire story.

Renteria couldn't handle the pressure of Boston

Right now we don't have a SS :?:

Manny for A-Rod? :D:

That's a sweet little deal the Red Sox made today.

I definitely think they should turn around and trade for Juan Castro!! He's one slick-ass defender. Hits like crap, but good with the glove.

LaRussa really didn't help Edgar with this interview he gave on WEEI in May.

In an excerpt from an interview with WEEI’s Dale and Holley, Tony La Russa talks about Renteria's adjustment to Boston and takes a sneaky whack at Edgar: “I think he (Renteria) comes into this situation, they’re paying him a lot of money, I think the fans, probably the expectation he’s gonna do something like Nomar, in Nomar’s vintage years. And I don’t know if he can be that productive. He’s a sensitive and shy guy and this is why a lot of us worry about him coming into Boston. You know Boston, there’s a lot of expectation here, the fans are very passionate. And they’re not going to be as forgiving as they were in St. Louis. So we’re concerned that if he doesn’t really play to their expectations and they start hootin’ on him, and I know fans don’t want to hear this, but it will not help an Edgar Renteria. I think it will hurt his feelings, and I’m just telling you he’s a really great guy, he’s very good player and I think it’s gonna be hard for him to hide here and I think it takes a special type to play in Boston. Somebody who really likes the attention. Not being able to hide will really bother Edgar.”

Gammons just said the the Red Sox are going to package Marta to "another team" that might not be Tampa Bay. Hello, Adam Dunn?

The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes adds this to the puzzle

Gordeon Edes of the Boston Globe reports, that the Edgar Renteria - Andy Marte deal will be finalized once Bud Selig signs off on the money that is being exchanged between the teams.
The Red Sox will be picking up a portion of the remianing $29 million on Renteria's 3-year contract - how much though is unknown at this time. The Red Sox are expected to look into signing a free agent shortstop(Nomar anyone?) rather construct a deal that would flip Andy Marte to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo. Dec. 8 - 11:52 am et

Not sure if that makes a ton of sense, depending on the prospect. Cinci just opened up a spot (and salary) for Dunn by dealing Casey. And they have a hotshot 3d base prospect, whose name escapes me at the moment. They need pitching, so unless the prospect is a pitcher, seems like a net downgrade for them (albiet with salary savings, but I'm not sure that's part of their need).

I'd imagine Youkilis or Lowell now get dealt to Minnesota for relief pitching.

And can Marte play short?

No, Marte can't play short. The Braves were considering moving him to 1st or the outfield, but I don't think Marte impressed them defensively at those positions.

I read that they want good defense from SS, and they don't care about offensive production. Could our old friend Royce soon be donning a new color of Sox?

Gammons just said on WEEI that Boston will go after Alex Gonzalez for 1 or 2 yearshttp://florida.marlins.mlb.com/images/trans.gifhttp://florida.marlins.mlb.com/images/trans.gif

I was going to suggest Alex Gonzalez. He's be perfect for them. Keep Youkillis at 3rd until Marte is ready. Now if they only had the balls to trade Nixon for picthing and signed a stop gap like Encarnacion.

This is a good deal for the Braves. The Red Sox also get a potential great player. My only question is why would they want Julio Lugo to be the SS in Boston?
