Twins GM Terry Ryan met with Mike Piazza's agent, Danny Lozano, yesterday.
"We had a nice conversation about Mike," said Lozano, adding that he talked to Piazza after the meeting with the Twins. "Mike said he'd be willing to do whatever the Twins would want him to do. Mike likes the team, because they have a chance to win. That's what he wants to do." The A's are also looking at Piazza, but it appears they'd prefer to sign Frank Thomas. There aren't any teams that have gone public with interest in him as a primary catcher. Dec. 8 - 5:06 am et

Ryan acknowledged that he has interest in free-agent slugger Frank Thomas, who as expected was not offered arbitration by the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday and will not re-sign with the only big-league team he has played for.

The big concern with Thomas, 37, is his health after he played in just 34 games last season because of a broken ankle. Ryan said the Twins' medical staff is reviewing Thomas' health records. Ryan said it could be several weeks until a team signs Thomas, who also is drawing interest from Baltimore and Oakland.

Piazza, on the other hand, could have a new team within two weeks, Ryan said. The parties had an initial conversation in the Twins' suite at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel, and both Ryan and Lozano said no contract has been offered. Piazza, 37, would fill the Twins' need for a right-handed power hitter, having batted .251 with 19 home runs and 62 runs batted in last season. Piazza, who was not offered arbitration by the Mets, is intrigued by the possibility of being a DH after spending his entire career in the National League.

wow twins really going away from thie philisophy that brought them so much success over the past few years. Going for a few big hitters rather than relying on speed and base hits.
