(COOPERSTOWN, NY): The 10 finalists for the 2006 Ford C. Frick Award (http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hofers_and_honorees/frick/index.htm) have been selected, and the ballot features three candidates chosen by fans in an exclusive online vote conducted in November at www.baseballhalloffame.org (http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/). The remaining seven broadcasters were chosen by a research committee from the Cooperstown-based museum. The 10 finalists for the 2006 award, with the winner to be announced on Feb. 21:

Tom Cheek
Bill King
Ken Coleman
Tony Kubek
Dizzy Dean
Denny Mathews
Jacques Doucet
Graham McNamee
Gene Elston
Dave Niehaus

My guess is it will comedown to either Bill King or Tom Cheek, both of whom just passed away in the last coulpe of months.


King was beloved in the Bay Area and was quite a character. Cheek was the voice of the Blue Jays from their first pitch in 1977. Personally I would like to see Coleman honored but it is a tough ballot this year.
