BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox have traded catcher Scott Hatteberg to the Colorado Rockies for second baseman Pokey Reese.

The trade comes a day after the Cincinnati Reds traded Reese and left-handed pitcher Dennys Reyes to the Rockies for left-handed pitcher Gabe White and right-handed pitcher Luke Hudson.

Last season, Reese hit .224 with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 25 stolen bases.

His best season was in 1999, when he hit .285 with 167 hits, 37 doubles, 10 home runs and 38 stolen bases. He won gold gloves in 1999 and 2000.

Hatteberg played in 94 games last season, hitting .245 with 68 hits in 94 games. He has a .267 career average in seven seasons with the Red Sox.

I tried acquiring a guy to trade him once. It didn't work out too well.

My nephew thinks it worked out fine, Kenny.

Actually, that trade is pretty decent for both parties - Hatteberg is below-average defensively for a catcher, but he's a decent hitter who had an off year last year - think Brook Fordyce. Hatteberg isn't great, but neither is Pokey Reese. And having Reese on the team will definitely help the Red Sox - they had no middle infielders at all last year.

I think Boston was trying to work a deal for Pokey last year around the deadline. It seems like there was a lot of talk about the Rockies wanting him then too. :?:

I remeber seeing Hattleberg vs. the sox. They tore him up on the base stealing.

There's my answer. I thought trading him was the only possible solution.

Remember when Pokey was untradeable for Ken Griffey Jr.? Ah how times change and how hitting worse than Royce Clayton can get your ass out of town in a hurry
