BOSTON -- In their constant quest to add depth to the bullpen, the Red Sox on Thursday acquired right-hander Jermaine Van Buren from the Cubs for a player to be named later or cash.

The 25-year-old Van Buren made six appearances for the Cubs last season, posting a 3.00 ERA over six innings. Opponents hit just .118 against him in his brief Major League stint. He was the club's pitcher of the year at Triple-A Iowa, posting a 1.98 ERA and setting a franchise record with 25 saves.

Unless you're talking about Martin Van Buren, not interested.

Nice deal for the Red Sox, Van Buren is far from a sure thing but he has good talent and it looks like it won't cost them much to get a look at him. I was wondering what the cubs were going to do with him now that he seems completely blocked from joining the bullpen.

What the flubs don't realize is that they don't get to PICK the player to be named later...

Martin Van Buren's son John Van Buren was a major Democratic politician in the 1840s and 1850s. Martin lost on the Free Soil Party ticket in 1848 in a race against Lewis Cass (D-MI) and Zachary Taylor (Whig-LA). John Van Buren's great, great, great, great grandson was named Jermaine. Alright, enough Van Buren "jokes".

Hey, just be happy enough sox fans know their history enough to make jokes about our 8th president. Though I'll bet some just remember the seinfeld episode.
