Konerko was the #1 free agent on many "expert" lists, and the White Sox, not the Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets, got him!

When was the last time the White Sox landed the #1 free agent????

I believe Albert Belle was a free agent the same year as Bonds, but I'm not sure of that.

I guess it helps to be the champs!

Yes Belle was the same year as Bonds. I know that cause my dad still is mad at Frank cause the decision was up to him and he chose "Joey" instead of Bonds. There was another one that upset my dad I forgot who the pitcher was but we passed up Clemens cause Schuler thought he was too old and washed up.

I knew there was a reason I forgot who it was.

The Sox outbit a lot of people in their shocking acquisition of Albert Belle. To my recollection, Barry Bonds was an option that year, but I think the Sox would have had to trade for him...

The Sox have outbid other teams for expensive players via trade e.g. Colon, Floyd Bannister and Tom Paciorek.

Sox didn't outbid anyone to land PK. He chose to sign here for what was reported as "less money". It was all window dressing.

Bonds and Belle were the same year. I remember b/c SOX management asked Frank which one he'd rather have. He picked Joey.

Joey put up a MONSTER year in '98. .328, 49HRs, 152RBIs, .399 OBP, 48 doubles. :o:
Too bad the guy was a jerk.

Belle was huge that year. 152 RBI, DAMN. Who won the MVP that year, Mo Vaugh?

Juan Gonzalez. Belle finished 8th with those numbers! Remember kids, personality goes a looong way.

My favorite Albert Belle moment occured while watching a mid season home game . The camera switched to a behind home plate view, and Belle destroyed the first pitch into the left field seats. It was the best use of the behind the batter view I've seen.

Not counting the Belle signing, I think the Sox acquisition of Floyd Bannister after the 1982 season was the last time they signed a #1 free agent.

Not to mention that the Sox were awful that year, finishing at 80-82. That was Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel's first year.

They weren't awful that year. They just started really awful. Without that 8-15 start to the season, they'd probably have been in the race all year.

Bonds was not an unrestricted free agent. The Sox would have had to deal for him.

Remembering Belle's season, his second half was totally dominating-dont know the exacts, but after the break, he was unstoppable
