Does that mean we win the WS again in '07, '08, and '09, and then can't quite pull it out in '10, don't get there in '11, lose it in '12, and all the while get older and older until we end up with a pitching rotation of five 40-year-olds who all go on the DL?

If it is for 60 million- that is a good job on both sides and a fair deal. Thank you PK and Kenny for getting this done with both sides giving in somewhat. Sox gave the 5th year and PK did not hold them over the barrel for that extra million/year.

BREAKING NEWS

Konerko Staying With White Sox
http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/5908.jpgBaseball's top free agent is staying put. The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with first baseman Paul Konerko on a five-year, $60 million contract, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark learned Wednesday. The deal is slightly less than what the Angels offered him and also includes a no-trade clause.

Per the ESPN.com blurb, it's slightly less than the Angels offered. So a bit of a hometown discount. To many different sources are saying this so the odds are overwhelming that it is true.

The Sox and their fans couldn't ask for this to play out any better. They get Thome and Konerko before the winter meetings... now they are free to go after Pierre and Mueller (according to Phil Rogers and others including Rick Hahn alluding to a center fielder transaction.)

This team is starting to finally act like a major market franchise and apparently intend to start being a major player in the sport.

This long suffering fan appreciates it very, very much.

By the way ESPN's story says it is a LIMITED no trade clause. Even better.

I considered Konerko as good as gone at the beginning of the year (although I wanted him to stay...even when some wanted him out)...I may need to buy a Konerko black jersey to go with my Buerhle home jersey.

With Thome and Konerko 3-4 (wow) bleacher seats may require wearing a hard hat or bringint a glove for protection.

This is how I have the lineup as of now....Konerko and Thome could be flipped, and if Anderson or whoever is in CF shows he can hit I'd love to move Iguchi down to 6...but we shall see.

A no-trade clause would have been a far big deal to the Angels. Wasn't Paulie a five and ten guy in a year or two anyway?

No matter. This is awesome news. Right now, we are better than the team that won wire to wire and KW hasn't even gotten to the winter meetings. Can you imagine adding Pierre at this point?

Meanwhile, back in Sucktown, Ohio, our chief rivals have no real options for a new first baseman, have lost their top setup guy and need to resign Millwood, acquire a new setup man and find a closer just to maintain the status quo.

Life, my friends, is good.

Paulie's no dummy, theres only 1 town on the planet that will pay him that extra million or two a year in endorsements and there's only 1 ballpark in America that will cheer him till the day he dies. Abso-posi-lutely! Attaboy, Paulie! He made the right move for the Sox and for himself too.

He and Ozzie can run for co-mayors of Chicago, and it's pretty clear that PK and his agent and family realized that. And like you said, he can just about pick how big his pockets need to be to accept all the cash that can come his way through endorsements in and around Chicago.

Man, oh man, what a great day! Let me add my own banana! :moonwalk:

Paul Konerko has agreed to stay with the White Sox on a five-year deal, according to ESPN Radio and ESPNews.
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the deal is worth $60 million and includes a limited no-trade clause. He's more of a $9 million-per-year player, but at least he's a very good bet to be an above average regular for the duration of the contract. He's also a better signing for the White Sox than he would have been for the Angels, who have Casey Kotchman ready and Kendry Morales on the way up. Nov. 30 - 1:51 pm et

Here's what he said, in a nutshell:

Hawk's thrilled to have heard Konerko's back with the Sox, and even gave us a "You can put it on the board... YES!" at the end of his interview.
While not taking anything away from Rowand & the "Grind it out" type of player he is, Hawk said Thome is the same kind of player and is a great clubhouse guy, similarly to Rowand.
The 3/4 of Thome/Konerko will be among the best in baseball.
Each year, Kenny Williams puts the Sox in position to go into Spring Training looking better and even more equipped than the previous spring!
Hawk wouldn't be a bit surprised if the Sox went out and WON IT ALL AGAIN NEXT SEASON!

For the love of all that is good, can we please hold back on the eulogies for Frank, given that no official annoucement has been made regarding his future. Anything else is pure speculation.

Good job getting Paulie back for a repeat run. If the reports are true that he accepted less money to stay here, he deserves kudos and thanks. Let's hope Paulie lives up to the deal (I expect five seasons of 40+ homers, .280+ average, .895+ OPS, 100+ RBI in each), and that the Sox will be able to re-sign the real core of their team - the starting pitchers - when they are due for new contracts.

There are so many variables in this:

* How his ankle heals
* How long it takes to rehab
* What other deals are made before next April
* How "creative" FT & KW can be in putting together a contract
* And probably others that I can't think of

Yeah, I know, "but where does he play?" It depends on his ankle. The Astros kept Bagwell even as he was impaired, and not just as a sentimental favorite. It was scary to pitchers to know that his bat was available at any time. It seems to me the Sox could do the same think with Frank, depending on his ankle and the team roster situation.

I find it hard to imagine the Sox would just cut him loose. Sure, sentiment plays a part, but he's still a hell of a bat to have available.

Maybe I'm kidding myself, but I think he'll be back.

"Paul really did some soul-searching over the last couple of days," Landis went on. "And he started to realize that, if all else was equal, he wanted to be a member of the Chicago White Sox. He really likes it there. And just as important, he feels people like him there. He knows he has a lot of fans, and he respects that. He even talked about the fact that some kids there would be disappointed if he wasn't back there. Don't get me wrong. If it had to be that way for business, he would have gone another way. But basically, his heart was with the White Sox. And that's why he's going back. It isn't for the money."

IMO the top 3-4 combos in MLB from 2005-

1 - Ortiz-Manny
2 - Sheff-ARod
3 - Pujols-Edmonds
4 - Hafner-Martinez
5 - Cabrera-Delgado
6 - Anderson-Guerrero
7 - Chipper-Andruw

I'd slot Thome-Konerko in right around Hafner-Martinez, and with Delgado a Met, the Sox now have a top 5 middle of the order to go with a top 5 leadoff duo in Podsednik/Iguchi and some pretty serious balance at the bottom of the lineup.

Projection: top 5-8 in runs scored in 2006. And best record in the AL yet again.

U CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARD YEESSS!!! 5 YEARS $60 MILLION, sounds like a lot of money, but pauley probably deserves it. It looks like were well on our way to repeating. Ill still be sad to see Frank go, but resigning pauley will remedy the pain a little bit. I cant wait til april now

hahahahahaha.

i love life.

i'm posting here just so that i can make the trip over to the HUGE thread already covering this.

I guess it's easy to say "It isn't for the money" when he'll be making $12 mil a year...

Hey, more power to him :gulp:

Opening day cannot get here soon enough

Last month I passed on a Konerko jersey for a Burly one instead.

Guess it wouldn't have been that bad an investment after all...

So I get home from school, turn on my PC, and see that I have mail.
I think, "If this is another e-mail from MLB about holiday sales or something i'm gonna be mad". Turns out, it was from the White Sox.
BEST NEWS I'VE HEARD SINCE...well...since the Thome signing.
PAULEE'S STAYING...YESSSSS!

IMO the top 3-4 combos in MLB from 2005-

1 - Ortiz-Manny
2 - Sheff-ARod
3 - Pujols-Edmonds
4 - Hafner-Martinez
5 - Cabrera-Delgado
6 - Anderson-Guerrero
7 - Chipper-Andruw

I'd slot Thome-Konerko in right around Hafner-Martinez, and with Delgado a Met, the Sox now have a top 5 middle of the order to go with a top 5 leadoff duo in Podsednik/Iguchi and some pretty serious balance at the bottom of the lineup.

Then combine that with a top 3 pitching staff. :o:

It' wil be hard to watch us win 120 games next year 12-1, 14-2 and we'll long for the days that we'd just come back in the 9th,10,13th to win the game!

I'm sitting here at work, then my desk phone starts to ring. As that starts to ring my cell phone goes off to. I answer my desk phone and let the cell go to voice mail, then I get another call. 3 people call me in under a minute to tell met that Paulie signed. He will be an icon in this town for sure now.

GO PAULEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

For the love of all that is good, can we please hold back on the eulogies for Frank, given that no official annoucement has been made regarding his future. Anything else is pure speculation.

Konerko's signing, coupled with Thome's acquisition, means an all-but-official end to Thomas' 16-year-tenure with the White Sox. link (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051130&content_id=1274138&vkey=news_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws)

... why wait? I suppose there's always a chance something can be worked out in order for him to stay, but Frank is as good as gone.

DH (Thome) check, paulie back check, now who's gonna play CF? I'm really liking the way the off season is already progressing. What else does KW have up his sleeve? All the more to look forward to. Welcome back Paulie!

PAUL KONERKO: BACK IN BLACK!!!

I am SO HAPPY I flew in from New York City to see Game 1 of the 2005 WORLD SERIES at COMISKEY FIELD.

And I am SO HAPPY I gave one of my 8 precious tickets to my girlfriend who wanted to share the experience with me.

And I am SO HAPPY to see PAUL KONERKO REDEEM the TRUST I lost in the American athlete after Magglio showed Chicago his secret second face.

For $60 million dollars, the White Sox organization just got a HUGE PRICELESS INJECTION of GOODWILL in the City of Chicago. WE ARE HERE TO STAY, BABY!!! WE ARE BACK!!!

Would love to see some speculation on the most likely 2006 batting lineups.

GREAT DAY TO BE A CHICAGO WHITE SOCK!

"WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :D: WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"
