The 2006 edition of the NFT guide book for Chicago is out and on the page dedicated to the White Sox and USCF it says

"US Cellular Field is nicknamed "The Joan" after Joan Cusack a popular star in Chicago who does commercials for US Cellular." :?:

BTW on a related note, WBLM in Portland, Maine had a contest on sexist cell phone spokesperson. Cusack beat out Catherine Zeta-Jones and the Verizion guy. Those people need to get out more often

That's funny because I go to about 10 Sox games a year and visit this site everyday and I've never heard anybody refer to the Sox stadium as the "Joan."

I've heard it called, New Comisky, US Cellular, Sox Park, The Cell, and US Comiskular, but that's it.

Never hear it called that either. The NFT book is pretty good overall but they blew this one.

did a google search and "The Joan" comes up often

but it is a WSI link that explains the name

• It is permissible to call the ball park “Comiskey.” The accepted name by the regulars is subject to some controversy, but most have settled on one of three names: The Cell (probably the most common), Comiskey Park (its old name), or simply Sox Park (which a lot of older fans called the old ball park). Unfortunately Steve Dahl’s attempt to call it “The Joan” after Joan Cusack, U.S. Cellular’s spokesperson, didn’t catch on. Call it that and you’ll probably get vacant stares from the regulars.

I read the review -- who writes this stuff? They take a portion of stereotype, a dash of history, fold in cups and cups of attitude, and call that a review? I mean, c'mon...

"Bawdy bards of baseball, White Sox fans shout creative strings of expletives between beer guzzles and finger flip-offs. Nothing and no one is spared their gritty, expressive slurs—their beloved players and their mothers, the team’s cretin owner, the opponent, the park, its burritos, or the weather."

It was early this year I believe. Some guys beat up an off-duty cop (don't think it was Chicago) and when his wife tried to break it up, their girlfriends proceeded to pummel her. If he wasn't an off-duty cop nothing would have been heard about it.

Haha I think its kind of a funny name for the ballpark. Nothing serious, but its just a joke. By the way, I heard it called the Joan back in 1932 and even in 1752 BC... good thing US Cellular has improved reception since then.

I can only assume he meant 2000 and 2001.

Never will I call it the Joan :puking: I quickly turn the channel everytime US Cellular commercials come on. I've always called it Sox Park or the Cell

That's better than me.... Just like the t-shirt they sell outside the ballpark, "I still call it Comiskey!," and probably always will.

Those people need to get out more often

joan looks like she is allways constipated.

Everytime those blasted idiotic commercials come on, I wonder how in the hell she has a career as a spokesmodel. She is ungainly at best. Looks like a woman put together by a committee.

You would think a spokesmodel would be attractive, at least average with "a great personality" or something.

I just don't get it.
