Don Wycliff, the Tribune's Public Editor (does that mean the other editors are working in private?), wrote again today (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-0511170115nov17,1,7802063.column?coll=chi-opinionfront-hed) about the World's Greatest Newspaper's tangled relationship with that other team.

His closing line to the specific letter writer, who complained about the paper's unwillingness to talk about the corporate relationship in its articles, is "Get a grip."

That settles it, then! Again!

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Anyone else notice the first word in the first headline in the Sox tribute book the Tribune put out?

Cubs.

Let me get this straight, the guy the Trib puts in charge of publicly addressing reader complaints does so by insulting someone with a honest gripe. That surely falls in line with the Trib's sterling editorial policy...

I saw the article in this morning's paper. So let me get this straight.

Winning a World Series - who cares?

1.75 million fans showing up at a rally - pfft.

But being mentioned by Oprah Winfrey - now there's something important.

Whatever you say, Don.

This from the same organization that 'happened' to talk about the slum areas around Comiskey Park right before the playoffs started. (As if they weren't there in May?)

Don is the same guy who told me that it was unrealistic to think news organizations can get away from the conflict of interests that are prevailing today (I posted his reply to me...it is somewhere on this web site.)

I had mentioned to him that it would have sent a powerful message if he in his position, would condemn such conflicts.

"Get a grip" is what an idiot says when he can't come up with a reasonable counter-argument to a detailed complaint. A quality newspaper wouldn't hire a staff writer with this little analytical ability. The Trib makes him an editor.

Several people have already written about this but this line is a jewel:

As I said at the end of my column, the best we can hope for is to make the conflicts apparent and then let the buyer beware.

That's clearly the best we can expect from the Cubune, but it's not the best we can expect from a legitimate newspaper.

Precisely. I don't think Cubs fans like it too much you reply to their inane taunts with even more inane lyrics from the Go Go's.
