7 years - $84m (per WSCR)

Wow. I just can't picture him getting anything close to that. I thought a 5 year contract would be a stretch

Good luck Johnny! $12million a year!?!?!?! Does everyone think that they deserve that much? And who, outside of Pujols, deserves a contract longer than 4 years?

Damon Better hope that they don't apply the Three Strikes rule towards Crack because he's obviously been on on binge!

I can't believe that even his agent really believes this. He's just throwing a high number out there to work down from.

This is a joke, right? The guy just turned 32 earlier this month and he's looking for a 7-year deal worth $12 million/year?

Some of these agents need to go back to school for a lesson in Reality 101.

Seriously, Scott, how much are you asking for?

If this is really the starting price Boras is asking for, they might as well just schedule the February press conference in Detroit right now.

7 years at 12 million per? Wow. Who would be stupid enough to make that offer?

It's obvious Damon must not want to be the name and face associated with the word IDIOT anymore!

To be fair, he also did this last year with Beltran and got pretty close to what he was asking for. There are always stupid teams out there......

I should be just as stupid for 1/10 of what he makes in a year.

Yep. Boras has done a great job of saying silly things like this, getting one team to believe it, and then having them bid against themselves. Beltran, ARod, Kevin Brown, Maggs, Charles Johnson, Greg Maddux (before 2004- $9 mil for him this year? hahahaha),.........

I'm no business expert, but don't you start high and lower the bidding from there?

But if he does get anything close to that contract....well there is seriously something wrong with baseball.

To be fair, he also did this last year with Beltran and got pretty close to what he was asking for. There are always stupid teams out there......And Ordonez. And a lot of others.

But if the past is any guide, whoever signs him is doomed to be a below-.500 team.

What? How can you say he doesn't deserve that money?! He played in BOSTON last year, people! The mecca of baseball! Where everybody goes and gets better! And he will earn his money, especially if he stays out east and signs with the Yankees!

Or make the dumbass teams that actually believe him go away.

Let the bidding begin.
Why blame Boras or the other agents? They throw out a $$ number and years and then sit back and watch some owners/ gm's salivate over their player.
It's some of the owners/gm's who are out of their minds.

I'd like to refer everyone to the quote in my signature from JR. Unbelievable as it sounds, Boras and Damon will likely get something close to this figure, rather than what he truly should make.

11-16-2005, 07:53 PM
well - let's see how the hype will carry him. Damon is one of the worst outfielders I've witnessed and although his leadoff numbers are pretty good, he's not much of a baserunner.

I would pay anywhere b/t 8-10 for him for 3 years. Not much more.

I don't see Damon getting anything close to that.
Beltran was a player coming right into his prime who had a sensational season and post-season. Damon is a player past or at the end of his prime who can still hit but whose defense leaves a lot to be desired.

And just think of the numbers he could put up if he had some good hitters behind him in the order!!!!

I wouldn't be shocked if he somehow got six years out of somebody, seven I would be shocked.

I think this is going to end up like the Pedro Martinez deal last year. Red Sox and some other team offering similar money but the other team will give him an extra year on the contract.

Hey - as my Dad used to say, :you never know unless you ask." It didn't cost him a thing to throw out that figure, and maybe someone thinks they get a bargain at 3 years, $30m. There are a number of clubs out there with more dollars than brains...some really close.

Just watched again last night for the first time since we won it all. I wanted to watch just game 3 of ALDS but ended up watching much more of course!

No one should realistically offer Damon more than 4 yrs. guaranteed, 5th yr. team option. But some team probably will.
