Good move. Gotta love a veteran catcher that is OK with the backup role and fills in quite nicely when called upon. Even though he isn't the strongest at the plate, he doesn't cause any problems in the clubhouse and he's got sweet facial hair in his picture.

His average was...well....average, but man I swear that man had a hit every time he was in the lineup. He even hit a couple home runs this year.

He's the best backup catcher we've had in a long time. Way to go Widge!

Him and AJ are the best catcher combo since Fisk/Karkovice, heck they are better then Fisk and Karkovice, and they have the rings to prove it.

I would not be surprised if they went after Bengie Molina. Ozzie raved about him during the ALCS, commenting that he is the best catcher in the game. Since AJ is arbitration eligible, they may want to "upgrade" if they are going to pay more for a catcher. I would hate to see AJ go, especially since I just got his jersey, but this wouldn't surprise me if it happened.

I'm a Herm fan...he'd always give foul balls near him to fans.

As for Widge, I think he was a good back-up catcher and a nice team player. Plus, he did play some 3B for us.

Great news! And he can play third base, too!

As for bafiarocks, she hasn't weighed in yet on Herm Schneider. How about it, BR? Do you have some signs made up for Big Herm?

Awesome. I was hoping they'd resign Widger. It's so nice to have 2 quality catchers after not having a decent one in years.

I strongly doubt this will happen. Molina is a better all-around offensive player, and thus would receive more money in the open market. We'd be fine with AJ and he obviously has chemistry with the team and the pitchers, so he's the best option here.

I couldn't even dream of this team getting rid of AJ after last year.

In my view, resigning AJ, or picking up his option, or whatever was in his contract, is a CLOSE second on the priority list behind resigning PK.

Doubt that Widge can produce as well as he did last season offensively, especially the 1st half, but he certainly is a very SOLID backup and I'm hoping he can keep it going in 2006!

Welcome back Widge!!!

As a native of Mt. Prospect, I will add my comments after hose's.

I like the Widge re-signing. Seemed like a no brainer IMHO.

Since I now live in DC and don't subscribed to MLB's package I get only those few games on WGN and ESPN, I have a question to ask about Widger.

During the Series, Game #3, he was out talking to El Duque w/out Ozzie there. (Ozzie had already come out once -- so a second trip would mean goodbye El Duque.) And since El Duque is not supposed to have a large command of the English language and no middle infielder was there to translate I am assuming the Widger is bi-lingual -- or at least can communicate enough Spanish to get his idea across.

Anyone here know if that's the case?

Heck with six of the eleven playoff rostered pitchers being Latino that's not a bad thing to have on the ol' resume.

His 650K for 2006, what kind of increase does that represent over his 2005 salary?

You weren't a fan of Mark Johnson, Charles Johnson, Sandy Alomar Jr, Ben Davis, Robert Machado, Miguel Olivo, Jaime Burke, Josh Paul, Chad Krueter, Mark Dalesandro, Brook Fordyce, Charlie O'Brein, Jorge Fabregas, Ron Karkovice, Pat Borders, Don Sluaght, Mike LaValliere, Barry Lyons, Chris Tremie, Bob Melvin, Ron Tingley, Rick Wrona or Don Lindsey?

I would hope that catchers and/or Latin pitchers would have enough sense to learn some simple words like "fastball, slider, forkball, inside, high, etc." in the non-native language in order to be able to have some sort of communication on the mound. It's not like they have to have a discussion about which girl in the stands they are taking for drinks at which bar after the game.

Ben Davis spoke spanish.

Chris Widger does not.

Mound visits are more often than not done just to throw the hitter out of his rytham, trust me, I did it a lot.

When Widge came out to play the 14 inning marathon, I felt Ok and comfortable with him in there. Although you wouldn't want to have to count on him to be your full time catcher, he gets the job done and can be clutch. He'll be good another year. I'm happy for him.

Well $650,000 + EleventyGajillion - $500,000 - EleventyGajillion = ...$150,000?
Not bad, eh? A math wiz at work!

:o: Yeah a little harsh, but thanks for the welcome.

I know it sounds crazy, but it is a possibility. I am in no way advocating this move, it was a thought that I had when I was looking at the FA list on line.

Think of it this way, the Sox pitchers are pretty easy to steal off of with the slow moves to home, and AJ doesn't have the best arm, so this is the one weakness of the team that can be exploited in a close ballgame. Molina has a cannon, his offensive numbers are better, he's worked with a pretty good pitching staff in LA so I assume he calls a good game (I haven't seen enough of him to know for sure). Another poster pointed out that his salary would be too high, but AJ will get a raise this year anyway, so they will probably be close.

Maybe I'm smokin something, so this is all I'll say on this subject beacuse I hope it doesn't happen.

See you all on another post.

Yes, it's beyond crazy, to the point of insanity in fact. No, there is not percentage small enough to represent the possibility of this happening. That includes negatives too.

Absolutely! I'll never forget being at the game against the Yankees when we hit back to back to back then hit, hit, and Widge hits another one out. That was the game that ended our 7 game losing streak.

I'm not saying that I'm mad for the million dollar contract Ben Davis got. I thought he would be worth it. The only thing I wanted to mention is that we have more money to spend this year. Davis and Widge were getting what...$1.5 mil combined. With Widge now getting $650K and no Davis, we have $850K more to spend. That's what I'm happy about. If part of that goes to Davis, so be it...if part goes to PK...awesome...if part goes to Big Hurt...awesome...if part goes to sign a FA we need...good!
