Read "Eight Men Out" by Eliot Asinof. And don't cop out by watching the movie (at least, not until after you've read it).

Eight Men Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series - Eliot Asinof, 1963.
The 1919 World Series: What Really Happened? - William A. Cook, 2001.
Shoeless Joe and Ragtime Baseball - Harry Frommer, 1992.
Say it Ain't So, Joe! - Donald Gropman, 1979.
Saying It's So: A Cultural History of the Black Sox Scandal - Daniel A. Nathan, 2003.

Great recommendations from Baby Fisk.
If you read the Asinof book, I would highly recommend also reading the William Cook book. I think together they offer a more balanced perspective.
