Also in 1997, The White Flag Trade occured, with the White Sox 4 games ahead of the Cleveland Indians in the division late in August, the White Sox traded 2 of their starters for a ton of prospects, making White Sox fans believe the team had flat given up on the season, even though they were in first place. While those prospects turned out to be building-blocks of the 2000 Division title, the White Flag trade goes down as one of the worst moments in Sox history, because Sox fans saw that the Indians made it all the way to the World Series, all the way to Game 7 to be exact, and thought that could've been them had the team not traded away the starters...

Wow, this is completely wrong, we were 3.5 games back of the Indians.

??????????????????????????????

Come on. Get your stuff right if you're going to wax poetic.

Rock on, Fed. I liked your response to the picture. There's also another picture on WSI with a pic of Wrigley that says, "Where were you Cub fans in October?" Post THAT over there.

It's important to note they were 3.5 games behind AND under .500. I believe JR's statements were more damning than the actual trade but the Sox were set up for a 2005 Padres act as a best case scenario.

The Sox were in 3rd place, 3 games back, and .500 on the day of the trade, 7-31-97. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=1997-07-31) They were also 14.5 games out of the wildcard.

Yeah, but the problem is we ended up only 6 games back. Would it have been possible to play 6 games better had the trade not happened? We'll never know...

Nobody seems up for an argument in that thread. I have the last response from yesterday.

I will gladly take a World Series trophy over a "better attendance" trophy any day of the year. It's kind of like when I was in grammar school and the Sox would give out vouchers for perfrect attendance and straight A's. I would get the ones for straight A's and my brother would get the perfect attendance ones, I always felt like I was better than him because I was smart and all he did was not get sick.

That pic of the bleachers was brought up on a message board I go to. Luckily enough I found the exact pic that was used by the bitter Cubs fan.

surprising that a Royals/White Sox game on a cold/rainy day 1 hour before game time, while theres a parade going on on the field, isn't sold out.

Espically when people can look forward to Willie Harris leading off and Joe B rockin' the 6-spot.
