Yeah, he was shaking he was so mad. Gammons may be an idiot, but he does respect some fundamental concepts of baseball etiquette.

Yeah, that was great, and correct.

Can you elaborate? This sounds interesting. I'm guessing it revolves around his comments during the post-game press conference last night?

What did he say? I know Verducci from CNNSI was ripping Gardner.

Yeah, he basically called out Garner for his postgame comments, saying how the Astros have played their hearts out all year, not with a lot of offensive talent, from 15 games under in May, etc. and to win 2 gut-wrenching series in a row, that Garner was inconcievably way out of line to say what he did last night.

Phil Garner an idiot? Who would ever be so astute as to figure that out?

he did tell it like it was, they couldn't get the job done.

Am I hearing impaired, or did Gammons also call Juan Uribe "Jose" Uribe? Oops!

It's funny. I was so tired and emotionally drained after last night's victory. I didn't really understand how ill-considered and foolish Garner's comments were until I heard them fresh again earlier today over the radio.

Even if he truly believed his team deserved a verbal thrashing you don't deliver the message to them via the media. That's why every clubhouse has a door with a lock on it! How stupid...
:o:

The Astros won the National League pennant. We Sox Fans know how significant that accomplishment is and most everyone in Texas knows it, too. So what the hell is Phil Garner's problem?

Possibly the best bit of analysis I have seen all day. I may not always agree with Gammons but that bit gives a ton of respect for him.

I laughed at the stool-throwing temper tantrum he threw when Blum jacked it in the 14th. I don't think I've ever seen a manager act out like that because of a single play. Nice leader...

That was Dan Patrick, but yes he did call him JoseHim and seemingly everyone else in the national media. Former player Jose Uribe is actually his uncle - so at least they're calling him someone who he's related to.

As far as I'm concerned he's just a loud-mouthed douchebag with serious anger issues and a horrible "pornstache" who hopefully will never get another job as a major league manager after such an embarrassing public display.

At least one person at the press conference agreed and asked him what he said to his team in private before taking the stage. His answer: "Nothing."

It was last night, so I don't remember in full, but he said that what he had witnessed was embarrassing and that he was surprised his team was in the game at all (which sounds like a rip at the Sox at me). Yes Phil, your team just battled 14 innings, fighting for their postseason lives, and you call it embarrassing and can't even admit that the White Sox ARE that damn good

Last night, I was calling Juan Uribe "Juan Valentin" because of his great defense during the game.:D:

Garner may have lost his team with those comments.

Wow. Verducci really rips Garner a new *******. It's even worse than I suspected. Houston is hitting better in the World Series than they did during the regular season?
:o:

I say polish these guys off as soon as possible. As far as I'm concerned if the Astros get swept, it's 100 percent on Garner's head for demoralizing them after Game 3.

Garner called his team's lack of offensive production an embarrasment.
Gammons said, "Embarrasment?! You want to know what's an embarrasment? To throw his team under the bus, especially during a World Series is unconscionable!"

And Harold Reynolds quickly agreed. Larry Bowa started the segment by saying the comments were unfortunate and something Garner has to regret.

Gammons has picked it up ever since he called himself a fool for predicting the Cubs in the 05 series. He made that prediction after the 04 series.

Anyone who follows baseball knows one basic truth: If you believe the roof being open or closed matters, it does. Garner not only allowed his team to fall into that pit, but participated in it. As I said in another thread, contrast Garner's comments with Ozzie's:

"They can close the roof and build a second one over it. We don't care."

Calling out his team is just another example. Same old Scrap Heap Garner.

As much as I want to win the series, this Astro team is excellent. They have a low key, classy bunch of atheletes who came from a 15-30 start to win the pennant. I actually felt sorry for the players, having their manager go out and dis them in public without a word of praise to them in private. To me, the smart thing and supportative thing to say would have been, "I believe in my guys and they have played hard all year. We aren't about to lay down. We'll get them tomorrow." I was really shocked at what a moron he was. He sounded like a big-mouted crybaby to me. He's owes his team an apology.

That may be true...but you cant use the media to get that message to your players...have the guts to go in there yourself...also he has made a lot of mistakes that have been crucial in the series...i feel bad that such a team of classy veterans and young guys have to end/start their careers with a manager like him who cant step up and talk to them

Exactly. Garner is entitled to all of those emotions and he definitely has the right to express them to his ballplayers. However the smoking gun to this episode is Garner admitting he hadn't said a single word to his ballplayers before ripping them in front of the media. That sends the wrong message.

Garner basically told his team he has already checked out. I guarantee his ballclub didn't miss the message. Now they can only play for their own pride because everything they've done so far -- including winning the National League pennant -- doesn't count for **** with their own manager.

I've been totally impressed by the Astros players, their gritty playing, skill, determination, attitude, and class. I agree everyine underestimated their capabilities and they are a very worthy representative of the best of the NL and a very, very good baseball team. To a man last night they were stoic, classy, and clearly focused on the correct and very difficult task ahead of them, to simply win game four.

On the other hand, Garner's behavior last night from the screamimg at Carl to tossing the chair to his post game comments are about as classless as they get. Fortunately for Sox and their fans, who have a long history with Scrap Heap, it has been very enjoyable to watch Garner go to pieces. It's also great to see the national media call him out for his atrocious behavior.
