Thank God it didn't.... but lets say HOU ties it up and it goes 17, 18, 20 innings...

Who else would have pitched for the Sox? Burly maybe 3 innings if its desperate?

Then who? Do we have a position player who can pitch?

Blum....

Dye also has a strong arm....

Seriously, I'll bet Contreras would have been willing to pitch if needed.

Maybe a double switch and have Widger throw a few innings...

Honestly, I think its best not to even worry about it at this point. Lets just win tonight and let me have my life back.

Of course... but for some reason I love the whole concept of needing to have position players pitch. Its so rare that they HAVE to (most of the time its a meaningless game and done for fun).

Also... seconds after I posted this Cooper was on North discussing this.

Blum was mentioned.

Contreras would have gone down to the pen in the 15th no doubt about it.

That's why we should have kept Jose Canseco.

This what-if game cuts both ways. Wasn't today's Astros starter warming up, or getting ready to warm up as last night's game was coming to an end?

Yeah, they put Backe in the pen

But who would have caught for him?

Konerko was drafted out of Highschool as a catcher, but I believe that was the last time he donned the "tools of ignorance".

We still had Ozzie, Baines, Raines, Walker and Cora on the bench.

Apparently, the current Angels manager was tasked by the Dodgers to work with Konerko's catching skills. He considered it hopeless, said Konerko could be a pretty good hitter and recommended the organization move him to first base.

i believe brian anderson was also a reliever in college. if he were on the roster, he might have been warming up.

Then we re-sign jose canseco just for this incident.

I was totally surprised by seeing Buehrle in the pen, but I guess that is the most logical choice. I just never thought of that.
I was assuming that Garcia would have come in next and we would move Contreras up on short rest. Guillen made the right decision.
