If we were going to choose the three most maligned and/or least known players on the White Sox roster coming into last night's game, I don't there's any doubt who the three would have been.

Damaso Marte. Geoff Blum. Luis Vizcaino.

Vizcaino---The throw in on the Podsednik deal. A guy we hoped we wouldn't see except in mop up duty. And what does he do? He comes in with a man on when El Duque gets hurt. He steps up. He gets us to the next frame. He bails out his team.

Blum---Our only acquisition at the trade deadline. A benchwarmer who didn't really make a contribution. And after the Astros turn that incredible double play to seemingly snuff out any chance of a White Sox rally, what does he do? He hits the game winning homer and makes KW look like a genius (again).

Marte---Raise your hand if you are sorry you ever said anything bad about Damaso Marte. This is the guy we were so pissed was on the postseason roster instead of McCarthy. Why, Ozzie? The guy who had us all colllectively groaning when he came in in the 13th and walked a man. We knew Ozzie should have brought McCarthy. WE KNEW IT!!!

And what does Marte do? He sends the next three down in order and, had it not been for a misplay by Uribe, would have finished the game as well. But nevermind that. He got the win. He got a win in the World Series despite everything going against him. He was called on to step up in the single most important moment of his career and he was up to the challenge. He pitched the game of his life when it mattered most. He was there when he was needed, just like the rest of this team.

Three players who have hardly given us a memory to latch on to all year. And these are the three who step up.

It just had to be this way, didn't it? It wouldn't have been right to finish things off without every single player making a contribution. That's what this team does.

Marte, Vizcaino, Blum.

It just had to be. Right?

Great post. This was total redemption for them. And the entire postseason has been redemption for Joe Crede.

Tonight Jenks scores the winning run by stealing home with two outs in the top of the ninth. Twenty minutes later, Ozuna gets an unassisted triple play with the bases loaded to close it out.

This team made it because every game, somebody new gets to play the role as hero. Everybody gets their chance to shine on this team. Even guys like Blum & Marte.
I hope Iguchi breaks out tonight. He's long overdue.

You got a stolen base, which was more than enough to send Bafiarocks into a state of ecstacy that will last for days.

2005 World Series: game winning HRs by Podsednik and Blum. How ludicrous does that sound?

Bottem line....we don't just have good players.

We have THE TEAM!

The classic example of the total being greater than its individual parts.
Solid professionals, well above average but not fitting the accepted definition of "star players", good bench specialists, deep bullpen.
Give me a solid baseball team over a dysfunctional "all-star team" any day of the week.

Wonderful post. I think most of us share those sentiments.

I was almost feeling bad about Blum in his press conference when he was saying how he was happy to be with the Astros because they let him play every day, seeing as we give him 1 at-bat a month.

But I'm sure he's happier being 27 outs away from a nice gold ring and a fat bonus! Not to mention going down in history getting the go-ahead run in the longest World Series game.

He was there when he was needed, just like the rest of this team.Don't take this the wrong way - I know Ozzie had no choice but to bring Marte in, and I'm happy he did his job effectively (I think he even looked pretty good out there - making guys look at 2 strike fastballs 2 ABs in a row), but I still don't think he should have been on the postseason roster. How nice would it have been to have McCarthy available out there to go 4-5 innings last night and save the bullpen from exhaustion? I was more worried than anything that losing last night would mean an exhausted bullpen and a close series.

Very good post though. I don't mean to criticize the rest of it. I just wanted to point out my disagreement with one point.

2005 World Series: game winning HRs by Podsednik and Blum. How ludicrous does that sound?

Don't forget, it's really all about the pitching. The bullpen being lights out, and giving players like Pods and Blum a chance to be heros.

I think you can 'neutralize' certain players, by pitching around Konerko (unless it's raining, and the bases are loaded, then the obvious choice is to toss a meatball over the plate...) or Dye, but you cannot focus on an entire team. And this is where the W.Sox excel. There is really no WEAK link on this team. Each player has his strengths and Ozzie is excelling at managing to them.

I am absolutely blown away. And jealous.

But, it's all about the pitching. Getting the team to the 14th inning on the road is a massive accomplishment.

:gulp: Good luck tonight! End it.

Don't get me wrong. I actually gave Marte a :worship: for his work last night...something I thought would be existentially impossible!

Still, do we think that one performance merits him an automatic spot on the roster next year?

I think Phil Garner was the MVP for leaving 'Zique in too long. Idiot wanted to keep Rodriguez fresh in case Clemens couldn't go for Game 5...even though I'm sure Pettite would be set to go on 4 days rest if a Game 5 was to happen.

Inept managing by Houston in the 14th. Meanwhile, Ozzie didn't hesitate to put Buerhle in at the end.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard him really talk and he's actually quite funny.

Reporter: What was going through your head when you were rounding the bases after you hit the homerun?

Blum: Make sure and touch all the bases.

Damaso has earned his way back to this team between last nite and the outings at Minnesota and Cleveland. Electric Damaso is back and with him and Neal we hold the lock on the best lefty bullpen in the league next year. If people just let him up after this season I am confident he will be back. Just needs to work on his arm slot against leftys. Something that Neal needs to work on too. These guys are the sox version of those lefty bullpen guys for the twins a couple of years ago.

C'mon Freddie the Clincher!!!

:)I was thinking the same thing. Awesome. I apologize publicly for ever thinking Ross Gload should be on the postseason roster ahead of you, Geoff Blum.
