BOSTON -- Cleveland Indians manager Charlie Manuel underwent gall bladder surgery a couple of weeks ago, he's had part of his intestines removed and he's on a strict diet because of high cholesterol, but that all might pale in comparison to the malady he had a brief brush with on Wednesday at the winter meetings.

With a deal in place to send All-Star outfielder Darin Erstad to the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland's AL Central division rivals, the Anaheim Angels backed out at the last minute when Angels' upper management reportedly balked.

The deal was to have sent Erstad and a minor leaguer to the White Sox for outfielder Chris Singleton, pitcher Jon Garland and two minor leaguers, a highly placed source told SportsLine.com.

"See, the good Lord's looking out for me," Manuel said, smiling broadly, when he learned of the news from a reporter.
