Holy crap, what a game. You can look at it two ways, either it's a game of missed opportunities or just an amazing bullpen display on both ends. The Stros just had the bad break losing their starter early. Either way, three more to go.

That was pure clutch. They didn't make it easy on themselves but they got the outs when they needed them. Stranding Taveres on first twice? That's gotta hurt.

We all saw Jenks, but Cotts deserves some serious credit for striking out Ensberg and Lamb back to back. Just nasty.

Well, after the outstanding start to chase Clemens after only 2 innings  , I was starting to get worried about all those guys we left on.

Then, we had to go to the 'rusty' pen...
:D:

The one thing that worries me now is that everyone's seen our closer, so his 100mph+ heater and that sick curve will become easy for 'em to hit.
:D: :kneeslap::yup:

And, much kudos to Joe Crede - got the go-ahead HR and then kept us ahead not once, but twice.

I also want to give a tip of the hat to some fine baserunning.

First off, Carl going home on that grounder AFTER THE MAN LOOKED HIM BACK! Great heads up baserunning by Carl, and in a game where every run was huge, he was in the moment.

Secondly, Pierzynski's MASSIVE LARCENY of second base in the eighth. Dude looked like he was jaywalking. If he doesn't steal that base, he might not score on Podsednik's hit. Well, maybe he would have, but I still loved it.

Here's to you fellas. Salud! :gulp:

JC pitched like a true #1 pitcher in this game. He didn't have good stuff, had problems throwing breaking balls for strikes and left some pitches down the middle of the plate. But he made big pitches when he needed to and not only kept us in the game, but got the W.

It's not as sweet as it would have been if Buster T. Beagle hadn't run off with his friend Missy last night (here's hoping someone found them and did the right thing), but it definitely made things a little better.

My wife, who isn't much of a baseball fan, watched the entire game tonight. When it was over, she was the first to say, "Three more!"

My contribution to the victory: About five seconds before Podsednik's triple, I said to my wife, "A gapper would look good right now."

One down. Three to go.

10-22-2005, 11:55 PM
Was that Robin they showed in the crowd after the Podsednik triple?

Also: for anyone who didn't see the quote on sports center, after the game, it was the sports quote of the year (paraphrase):

"Bobby, you were throwing 100, but it must have felt like 1000 out there...

I was just trying to take it easy and throw strikes."

There is just too much to talk about in this game.

Contreras was solid. Definitely not his greatest night though.
Our guys did a great job of getting to Clemens.
However, not pounding Rodriguez was pretty frustrating.
Crede is clutch.
Cotts is awesome. Jenks is unfair.
This team is winning it all.

We didn't play all that well and we still won, so I'm confident about the rest of the series. Contreras has some guts in him shutting down Houston after coughing up a 3-1 lead. The atmosphere was as electric as ever!

Hey - it's not our fault that MLB awards the title to the team that "wins more games in the World Series". Everyone knows that short of a series is driven by luck

Screw it, having too much fun right now. I'm so happy, it's scary. Best record in the AL all year, Sweep ALDS, 4 complete games in ALCS victory, win game 1 of the WS. Does it get any better?

(yes, win games 2-4!)

Yeah, just because MLB says the winner is the first one to 4 wins doesn't make it right. It can still be a tie if BP says it is...

Damn this feels good. Get number 2 tomorrow and send Garcia to the mound in Houston. Loved seeing BurlyMon yucking it up in the dugout. He is clearly enjoying himself and not nervous at all.

Wow. The DC gathering had about 40 Sox Fans. We took over a corner of the huge billiard bar. It was awesome!

And the game was great too! This is one of the coolest nights I've ever had as a Sox fan!

Hokie,

I am with you. We thought we were going to be 18 WSIers and friends in DC and having 40 show up was amazing.

I was talking with my friend, Greg -- who is not on the list, that this game was the 2nd best Sox game in my lifetime. Seeing us win Game #1 of the ALCS in 1983 in person in Baltimore was still my best.

But to be 800 miles from Chicago and still have that many Sox fans was overwhelming. I feel like a kid the night before Christmas -- I can't go to sleep because I am thinking about tomorrow.

Hokie, I hope we get together for another game.

WOWWWWW!!!!! JUST WOWWWWW!!!!

I just got home from a terrific Arizona Sox fans gathering. Did you guys in Chicago hear us sceaming our lungs out?? We made our presence known, that's for sure! There was one loudmouth left over from the Texas vs. Texas Tech game who cheered for the Astros for the first couple of innings, but he took his leave when he saw he was outnumbered--and outshouted!

It was great to meet: wsoxfan and friend, pssondacubs and wife and daughter, billyvsox and debbiev, and power98. Power took some great pictures which should be posted tomorrow, I believe.

I could not believe that so many would wait until inning's end or when everyone else was up that the people would come up and down the stairs. Had a great view of the game with very little interuption.

Just another great day to be a Sox Fan, eh?

:gulp:

And just another day at the park for the White Sox. Even with all the buildup and drama and history going on around them, they guys just played like it was another game in a long season. These guys know they have business to take care of, and it's happening with three more wins.

It dawned on me as I was watching the scenes of Sox Park from a friends' living room. The place I've spent many a summer night enjoying is on the TV, for the WORLD SERIES. The park I'm so familiar, my baseball home, is being shown for the WORLD ****ING SERIES!

I love this team. And anytime Bobby Jenks wants to end the game with a 3-pitch strikeout to earn the save in a World Series game, I'm good with that too.

Joe "Captain" Clutch does it again! Absolutely incredible!

Jenks was also amazing. That pitch to Bagwell was unhittable. Great job with those four outs.

But the person who deserves a lot more credit than he's going to get is Neal Cotts. Those two strikeouts were what put Jenks in that position where he could strike out Bagwell to end the inning. That was El Duque level clutch.

Aside from shining in our obvious strong suits (pitching and defense) yet again, we certainly proved one thing tonight, and that is that Berkman CAN'T beat us by himself. He was insanely clutch tonight, about as clutch as you could ever hope for. But we shut down Ensberg behind him, and the bottom of their order never really had a chance to sneak out a run against Jenks to counter Crede's blast and Uribe's 2 out double.

Another huge positive was the game that Dye had in the 3 hole. That at-bat against Clemens was unreal, and after that they were afraid to pitch to him. If he's hot in this series, we're really tough to beat.

If we can shut down Ensberg, and Dye can stay hot the rest of the week, I have a real good feeling that our 7, 8, and 9 hitters will outproduce theirs, Paulie will hold his own against Berkman, and Scotty will hang with Biggio. If one of the trio of Iguchi, Rowand, or Everett can also provide key hits in this series, especially in the games in Houston where our pitcher will be batting 9th, then that's just icing on the cake.

I had a heck of an experience. I got to the park at 2:45 without a ticket, passed through the laughable security bubble, and put up my finger. I'll start a thread tomorrow morning about my experiences but I picked up a $250 ticket to the upper deck and the guy stubbed me down at 6:00. He went through the gate with me, which is the only reason I went with him. Legit ticket, all good, saw the game, was on TV (on FOX a minute after we won and went crazy.

I haven't decided if I want to go to game 2. I'm short on cash and the weather will be pretty bad (it was cold as it is tonight). But I could get a ticket if I tried. Maybe I'll go for game 6, (although hopefully there won't be a game six-and I'm not talking about a Houston win!).

Bridgeport was crazy, people screaming, honking their horns, cheering. Even in Greektown, which was where I went at around midnight, people were chanting Let's Go White Sox. This was fantastic.

Police did a decent job of not being too intrusive, security bubble was harmless.

I met Bernie Mac, Tommy Lasorda, Minnie Minoso, Mark Giangreco, Boston Gammons, Lisa Dergan (she is smoking hot), Nomar Garciapara, and Jennie Finch. Jennie just walked right by, no entourage or anything, and we were all like, sup Jennie. I said, "too bad you're not pitching" and she smiled.

"I felt good that Ozzie just remembered how to call somebody in," said catcher A.J. Pierzynski (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6109). "I thought he might mess up and forget how and call in the wrong guy."

I guess he remembered.

Joe Crede spearing hot smash after hot smash, snuffing Astro rallies.
Joe Crede smoking an 0-2 fastball over the left-center wall for the winning run.
Neal Cotts fanning Ensberg and Lamb with the tying run at 3rd in the 8th.
Bobby Jenks - the big wide kid - blowing away Jeff Bagwell in the 8th with 100 mph gas and everyone in the 9th.
Jermaine Dye getting it all started on a 9-pitch opposite field HR to dent the Rocket's armor.
Scott Podsednik sending the Rocket to an early shower with a 12-pitch strikeout in the second (the second best strike out in the postseason - behind AJs, of course.)
Jose Contreras pitching out of jams caused by Willy Taveras's lead off double in the 6th and two hit batsmen in the 7th.
Aaron Rowand executing a hit and run perfectly in the second, sending Carl Everett to third.
Everett scoring one batter later after Mike Lamb failed to really hold him at third on a hot grounder to first by AJ.
Juan Uribe and Scott Podsednik hitting two-out extra-base hits in the second and eighth to add important runs.
AJ stealing second in the 8th - his second steal of the postseason after no steals during the year.
AJ stepping out against Clemens in the second just to mess with him. His grounder would score Everett from third.
Ozzie Guillen's signs from the dugout, and the way he called for Jenks from the pen.
Seeing everyone who contributed this year - from Herm Schneider to Frank Thomas, to Joe Borchard - lined up along 3rd base for the introductions.
Seeing a packed house at the Cell go hog-wild for our Sox.
Watching the White Sox win Game 1 of the 2005 World Series.
